My vote goes for Purolator PureOne or Napa Gold/Wix. THe Purolator goes for $5 and has great filtration numbers and results from Black Stone labs and is a quality filter made in the USA.

I love Mann filters. We have been using Mann filters on the cranes at work for over 20 years.

What is the Mann part number for a 3.4L engine? Is Amazon the best place to buy Mann for the Tacoma?

Thanks for the data point - good to know.

Part number for the 3.4L is ML1003. According to Google product search, the best price is less than $3/ea at Rock Auto (http://tinyurl.com/3l3ey3l). S&H will drive that up a bit, but it's a long way to Amazon's ~$7 price...

I use a reuseable filter Trufilter, you can really see whats happening to your oil in your engine. I also use Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5-30W. Dont ever use Valvoline Full Synthetic oil, its crap. I used it once and when I cleaned my trufilter there was so much crap that was caught in the filter it took for ever to clean it out.

Just bought a case (10) of OEM Toyota 90915-YZZD1 filters for 39$ shipped. The Toy dealer i bought them from said the "D1" is technically listed for the Lexus but works for the 5vz-fe as well and i think he said it's made in Taiwan (?) But he mentioned the 90915-YZZG1 is what the computer tells him is for my 03 Taco v6 and made in the USA - so I asked him "If brought in my truck, which filter would you use?" he said the "G1"

I had him go grab both filters and compare them. The only difference he could see was that the USA Made G1 did NOT have the pre-lubed/plastic wrapped opening/gaskets it was "dry"

They were the same price, so i went with the D1.

Just a thought, but maybe the valvoline cleaned a bunch of crap out of your engine that the M1 wasn't getting.

and as for the poll, non of the above, I use Mann on all my vehicles

I never claimed scientific testing. All I did was disect these to see the composition of media, amount of media, and construction comparisons.

+1 Oil could be designed so it always comes out looking much much newer when you drain it. Only problem is it wouldn't be doing it's job. It's supposed to look dirty because it's designed to remove all of that dirt from your engine.

There's a few things that you always go OE replacement on toyotas. Oil filters, engine air filters, and wiper blades.

    Mr. Quattrokiwi,
F.Y.I. Ever since I bought my truck I always put Royal Purple in my engine. Then one I decided to switch to Full Synthetic Valvoline and after changing the oil and cleaning my filter (Truefilter) I found alot of deposits in the filter, from using the valvoline. So I went out and bought Mobil 1 for the very first time because thats what alot of the guys use on these threads use. Royal Purple is just to damn expensive. So YOU say maybe valvoline cleaned a bunch of crap out of my engine that M1 wasn't getting. I think you need to read what I'm trying to warn you people, just a thought! Now, if this affendes you than its your loss! Good luck with your $3 or $10 threw away Mann filter. You should maybe spend some real $, one time purchase and buy yourself a real filter (Trufilter) it will make a hugh difference and you can stop spending your $ on Mann filters. Peace out and happy trails:D

Why:confused: I got $3 wiper blades on my truck and they are just fine. My fram tough guard air filter came oiled, toyota's do not. My baldwin and purolator oil filters have kept my oil relatively clean for 7500 miles easily. Just my $.02.
