Best option for new truck?

Discussion in '3rd Gen. Tacomas (2016-2023)' started by cseigh, Jan 1, 2017.

?

What should I buy?

  1. 2nd Gen DCLBFTMFW!!!!

    37.3%
  2. 3rd Gen stick shift. Better to have a long stick than a long bed.

    62.7%

    Short version:
Have an 05 TRD Sport Access Cab w/ 126,000 miles. Need back seats for kids (getting waaay to big)
Want long bed (use it quite a bit)
Hate 3rd gen auto. Refuse to buy it. Don't mind the 2nd gen auto. Have one in current truck.

Option 1: Can get a Certified Pre Owned 2014 DCLB TRD Sport with low miles (12,000) for around $29,00. 7yr/100k warranty.
(Bonus, I can put the topper from my current truck on this one and save $)

Option 2: Dealer offered me a 3rd gen TRD OR manual w/ tech package for $34,000

Money isn't really that big of an issue. More worried about reliability. As a bonus I already know how to fix all the problems that will come up on the 2nd gen.

You know what your 2nd gen drives like. If you like the 3rd gen with a stick go for it. You get a warranty you won't get much of, if any, on the 2014

That said, it's hard to go wrong with something you know. There aren't many 2nd gens with low miles. That's what I decided to do last year after my 2015 got totaled by a red light runner. Searched the entire country, found the 2nd gen I wanted with low miles and haven't regretted it.

Sounds like a sweet 2nd gen. Already topper equipped, with the long bed you want/know you use.

However, you can do better than $29K IMHO. Push harder.

Its certified pre owned, so the warranty is 7yr/100k miles.

Get the 2nd Gen if you can get the price a bit lower.

NADA for this truck is $34,050
    KBB range is 30,155-33,000

I'm guessing the values are high because it is certified pre-owned from a dealer and comes with a warranty.
What should I shoot for if I decide to go for that one?

I was in your shoes aswell my friend. I
Opted for a 2nd gen because of the 4.0 track record. I have been tempted on the new pro model though. Low mile 2nd gen double cab 4x4 TRD models do bring a pretty penny though.

Is Option 2 a Brand New 2017? $34,000 is low for an OR with Premium and Tech Package.

For that price I would definitely go with the new '17. For the vast majority very few if any problems. Good luck with whichever route you go.

Nice price on the '17, I think I would lean in that direction.

Your not getting a getting a long bed in a manual 3rd gen. Unless it's an access cab, and then your going to need to go bigger cab later.

If the long bed is important, then that 15 is the better choice if your that concerned with 3rd gen auto. But 29 grand is pretty dam close to what you can get the 17 for.

What does the certified pre owned cover?
