What should I buy?

  1. 2nd Gen DCLBFTMFW!!!!

  2. 3rd Gen stick shift. Better to have a long stick than a long bed.

Just remember the dealer got it from someone, and they actually paid more of a wholesale, or trade in value price. Not retail.

What they have in it is the number you need to be thinking, of course allowing them a profit. But they have nothing in 'sale prep' on a truck like that. They didn't CPO anything. They just washed it, maybe changed the oil, and slapped a price on it.

At best I'd be looking at a number between Edmunds trade in and private party.

That is sounding like a good price on the '17. I just don't like the 3rd gen myself. Not because of all the chatter around here, they just have no appeal to me. But if you like it, and can live with the short bed, it could be a winner.

7 year/100,000 powertrain from original purchase date, covers all the same things as a new truck powertrain warranty.

So basically because it was bought in Nov 2013, it has 4 years/88,000 miles left on the powertrain warranty. Not too far off from what I would get buying new.

Get the 2nd Gen, unless you wanna gamble on a Turd Gen. I'm just not a fan of the new trucks.

Get a low mile certified 5th gen 4Runner Trail with KDSS.

Also, why specifically the long bed? The long bed choice I made was because of the ride, not necessarily the space. I loved the long wheelbase ride. I have recently test drove short beds because long beds are harder to find and increase the search frustration. I found the shorties really handled quite well, I had expected a "bucky" jeep-like ride with the short wheelbase but was pleasantly surprised it wasn't present.
If you are determined to stay Tacoma, a shortbed with a topper and a tailgate extender for those times when you need the temporary length might be a good option.

No interest in an SUV. The wife has a Sienna for toting the kids around. I know the double cab is not the ideal family car, but it's only as a backup when I have the kids when she works or for camping/boating trips. Do not need or want a Tundra or any full size. I use my truck bed quite often (at least 1-2 times per week) for taking trash to the dump, buying lumber, and when we go on camping trips, etc and I fill it up regularly. I feel that the loss of bed space would hinder me quite a bit. I would just get the 3rd gen long bed, but that auto is a deal breaker for me. Hence the reason I am so torn on what to do and turning to internet polls to help me.

Since you can't deal with a 3rd gen auto but need the bed space you've made your choice.

    End of thread/

Dear Toyota intern who is forced to read TW,

It should be obvious by now, but if not, please go tell your bosses that people would love to see a manual version of the long-bed truck (all trims please).

    Thank you.

I feel you, sounds like you are coming form the same exact place as me, my girls are 2 and 6- the DCLB has had baby seats eating up the back since my 09' was a year old. I just sold my DCLB to my father after 7 years of being a very happy Taco owner. I just don't feel like pulling the trigger on the iffy new one at the moment until Toyota gets it all ironed out. This led me to look for a low mile 15' DCLB, and for what the dealers are asking for them, I could damn near buy a new truck for that money. Don't want the mpg and size of the Tundra (although they rule). My thought was to go a 4x4DCLB with a topper, which is basically a 4Runner. Drove a KDSS 4Runner, and it was no comparison. The few times I need to haul large amount of tile or lumber, I'll just go rent a truck from Home Depot. We have a camper, so much of the camping gear gets loaded in it instead of the interior space. Good luck!

I wouldn't have bought anything except a manual, only cause that's what I have driven forever. But I think to many folks are reading the TW taco auto issues. If the autos are that bad, would they still be flying off the lot?

I had a VERY similar situation, except the '15 was a DC 6MT - SB and had ~30000 mi. I went with the 2017 TRDDCSB 6MT Sport. Got mine before all the dealer fees, doc fees etc.. for 32300. The 2015 was at 29000, I never beat the guys up so I do not know how low they were willing to go, but it was "CPO" Anyway, I have 1300 miles on my new truck and LOVE It!!!! The kiddo fits in the back no problem with her seat and enjoys daddy's truck. I have not experienced any of the issues folks have mentioned here, but I only have 1300mi.

Tough decision for you - Both good trucks, but for a few $1000, I had the piece of mind that I am the first owner - previously own are always a mystery in my opinion. Hope this helps

    Cheers,

What I actually said was "I want a long bed", not " I need a long bed". I have never owned a short bed, but I know that I fill the bed on my truck regularly. I don't have any experience with bed extenders/load extenders etc. Hence my dilemma. Maybe I can make due with a short bed. Dunno.

Not trying to start a "crap on the third gen" thread. I drove a third gen auto before I read anything on TW. I immediately disliked the way it drove. I have since driven 4 more, and they were all same and all 2017's. I have faith in Toyota that I would be able to buy one and it would be reliable, but that's not the issue. If not, I believe they would fix the issue. That is based on my personal experience of them stepping up and replacing the frame on my 11 year old truck. However, I own my vehicles for a long time, and I don't want to live with a transmission that I hate driving for the next 10-15 years. I will admit that I have not driven one that had the TSB done, but I'm not willing to play "what if" with a $35k truck and buy it hoping that the TSB will make it better. So it's 3rd gen stick shift (drove one and loved it) or 2nd gen slush box.

I've owned both manual and auto trans toyota trucks and once I got over the need to keep the truck in D all the time for every situation, use S mode and ECT more often, the AT has been flawless and actually fun to drive. The different modes keep you more engaged in driving than any other I've driven and you can toggle between modes quite easily; bump shift left or right, up or down. If you think it shifts too much due to terrain, speed or wind then no problem, take one or two gears away.

Some people don't want that, I get it. They think the truck should drive like every other AT out there. If so then the AT is probably not for you.

I like having the options of making it a 4, 5 or 6 speed with the added surge of ECT when I want it. I've had the truck for almost a year now and 14k miles. Other than the R-D delay that was corrected by the original TSB the truck has been flawless both on and offroad. I looked at and drove plenty of 15s and 16s before I made my decision, the 3rd gens just felt more refined and a better truck to me.

Agree 100%. Love the MT 3rd gen I drove. And if I could get it in a LB this thread wouldn't even exist.

Nope. At least not in the U.S.

SE Toyota lists that as an option that I have pointed out here, but apparently when the rubber hits the road, it's not a reality.

I spent 12 years with my 1st gen shortbed, every single day I wished I had more bedspace but had to sacrifice for cab space. Since getting the longbed I've never thought I had too much. I will never own another shortbed again.20160416_091053.jpg

Similar thought process I am having. The Sienna we have has a ton of space, and I never think "Man, I wish I didn't have soooo much space"
