In the case of the two sports cars, both blew motors due to “performance tunes”.

@blacktaco. it's cool man, only thing anyone ever puts here is how amazing the OV tune is and how everyone should buy one like its the holy grail of improvements and you're the only person that i've seen mention what could happen.

Just because its Friday and I'm bored here at work,,,The best performance upgrade for a 3rd Gen I did, was trading it in for an F150 EcoBeast. Better fuel mileage, and TONS more power, room, comfort, etc.... Have a nice day!!

On just about any modern vehicle, a tune is going to be the best mod for the money.

I had an ecoboom for about 6 months. I saw the inside of the motor more than I saw the inside of the truck. Now I have another Taco.

I am not a 100 percent sure, but in Canada ,Toyota will not keep the engin warranty if this change is done to the engine.
I would sure really think of doing it,because i am deasapointed in the performance of my 2018 Tac.
Since day one,i always feel that it is underpower.
Strange to say,but i loved more my old 2007 Tac performance then this new model.
Don t get me wrong,it s a nice Tacoma, but i am not happy with the changed they did ..
    Regards
    Mario

Even with ovtune. I still enjoy a pedal amplifyer like sprintbooster. Together you get responsive truck

Out of curiosity how come the 2GR-FKS makes more power in different applications?

It's still a very conventional DOHC motor. The intake and exhaust valves are still opened and closed by the camshafts. Different cam shafts could be used to increase lift and duration. Back in my Honda days it was easy to swap in aftermarket camshafts, then tune the RPM/Load point for when it would switch from the small to big cam profiles. It wasn't uncommon to see 20+ WHP from cams and tuning in a 1.8L.

I'd imagine it being a bit more tricky with VVTi where the cam timing also comes into play. Nowadays I don't bother with "performance mods" as all they do is add noise and discomfort for a few negligible and HP that's difficult to measure. Forced induction is the way to go if you're looking at things in terms of cost/reward, unfortunately my cost/reward metric doesn't like what is offered for the Tacoma.
