I’ll be the first to admit that I’m really just starting to learn about my truck but a lot of what I’ve been reading and seeing suggests that a re-gear (some argue that 4.88 is the way to go; others swear that the 3rd Gen needs 5.29s—I am far too ignorant on the subject to offer any relevant thoughts) is the single-best performance mod a Tacoma owner can make.

Admittedly, it’s expensive and probably somewhat of a challenge to find a good, reputable shop who does this specialized type of work depending on your location.

3rd gen automatic, even with stock tires 5.29s all the way. then who cares how much weight or tire size you increase you have the gears already and they are perfectly fine in a stock tacoma and just a great add on to a modified one. now as for price front and rear install including gears are about 3k. but hes 2wd...only needs one set so maybe cut that price in half? theres a company called ECGS that sells already set up clamshells with gears installed all you have to do is remove your clamshell and put this one in. super simple and no need to pay for labor from a shop or if you still want a shop to install, it should cut install time WAY down so still looking at a fast, cheap and most highly recommended mod for our 3rd gens. after gears i would suggest getting an OV tune, you should feel a different truck after those two mods.

naysayers here have literally zero experience even trying to improve performance. but they practice talking about it every chance they get.

OV and a well-configured open exhaust will improve your performance. i am one of those around here who know from experience. SC & turbos coming soon if you can consider going broke.

and now someone recommend me a good whiskey for 7/4.

Thats true, but not to be a downer, a mid size pickup truck really isn't for fun power. Maybe try that OVTune as other have recommended?

If you’re trying to upgrade performance, might I suggest a new pair of running shoes.

Actually these truck have a fair bit of power. It just drives like crap! For some reason? (Gas millage?) Toyota made these trucks feel like a slug to drive.
But step on the gas and you'll see these engine have a lot of get up and go!

Toyota just tunes the throttle funny?
I would do the ovtune mod but I still need my "Arm and a Leg" LMAO!

No plans to do much of that, only when the need arises.

I was curious why I hadn't heard exhaust yet, good points. Does the OV void a warranty? That's a reason I haven't flashed the Vette yet, but warranty runs out in a month... Larceny is a good, well-priced whiskey.

I got rid of it and then moved to FL and I will not own a bike here. Way too many idiots on the road and I can't get out of town easily to avoid them. My speed fix is in the car now and the top comes off so I can have a little wind in what's left of my hair... :)

For budget bourbons, my absolute favorite for around $30 is Evan Williams single barrel.
