Where is the best place to get idler bearings for the 4.0, like the three idlers and the tensioner? It seems like all 4 of them decided that they want to sing to me every time I run my truck. blah... and they are surprisingly expensive, so a dollar or two off each would def help!

best/ cheapest bet would be to take them out and measure them. then go find a local bearing house and buy them cheaper

Napa has em, more than Rock though. I just did mine on my 4R, along with the belt, quick change.

can you just press out the old bearing and put in, say, a ceramic or some other unnecessarily high quality bearing into the original idler wheel? or not...

The bearings can be pressed out of the pulleys and could be replaced with one big exception. The bearings are proprietary sizes and not commonly available. By the time you had steel sleeves made to adapt the ID if the idler bearings to fit you have exceeded the cost of decent quality aftermarket pulleys. The bearing number in the tensioner pulley did not cross to anything in my searches, maybe if you measured it up you may have better luck with that one.

Note that the lower idler is different that the two upper idlers, the lower one has double bearings, while the upper ones only have one bearing.

Heres a copy of my post on this topic from another forum:

Ok, the idlers (on my V6 anyway, all original to the best if my knowledge) use Koyo 6302RMX ball bearings. They are the same dimensions as a common 6302 2RS, except with a 10mm bore instead of the common 15mm. Both upper idlers use one (1) each, but the lower idler uses two (2) for a grand total of four (4).

The tensioner uses an NSK BD17-31DUM, which is a double row ball bearing, so one (1) only.

But, googling these numbers indicates that the numbers are proprietary bearing numbers and not readily available. Sorry for the false hope. For the three idlers a spacer could be made to use 6302 2RS bearings, but unless you have a lathe and time on your hands, or have better luck finding premade spacers than I have, buying a decent aftermarket idler is going to be cheaper. It seems most of the aftermarket pullies are built with a spacer already, so if it ever failed again the next round would be easy. I don't have the tensioner pulley bearing dimensions, it is possible something could be matched up if you had the measurements. Sorry guys!

Well Im just now getting a squeal from my bearings at 120,000 miles roughly. I have had no luck with finding these from most bearing manufactures. But I have found them over sea's and in the process of buying some as of now. They are the exact match up to 3 of the 4 pulley's that have bearings in them. I had to change out the drive belt today and found one of the pulley's a little play in it. So at first I was looking at using a standard 6302 bearing which is real close to the 6302 RMX bearing but has a ID bore of 15mm instead of the 10.2mm bore. I can sleeve this 6302 bearing with a hardened bushing from MC Master Carr. But I would still be over the cost of the factory bearings that I am getting from China. So When I get these new bearings I will give an update of the condition of these bearings and how they are installed.

I see this is a bit of a thread revival but just to add to it. Gates makes a kit with all the pulleys a belt and a tensioner.

Did anyone figure out the if a sleeve was readily available to adapt the generic 6302 bearings?

    Hello,

I been doing some cross referencing with different bearing sizes. The stock bearing on the tension pulley is bd17-31. I looked up the specs on the bd17-31 bearing and then some standard bearing specs. The 4203 is the same size besides it's 1.5mm narrower then the bd17-31

Update, if you have the oem tensioner, the right bearing is 5203, the specs are the same as bd17-31

For the pulleys or the bearings?
