For people who has the 12volt, do you guys use a smartstart or just the 3xlock on your key fob? If so, which Smart start did you get?

I thought about adding that on, but I am in my house 99% of the time I would use it, and my fob reaches the truck outside. If I lived in the city and had my car parked in different places everyday though I would get it for sure.

It is just a regular key. I have NO clue why these people call it an H-key, it's literally the same as any other car key ever, its really pretty stupid in my opinion. The other option is the push to start. So you either have a push to start or a traditionally keyed truck.

Had a compustar on different truck also with manual, worked well. Didn't like; takes control over locks, 3rd party, more remotes, process to engage on manual trans.

Overall the heated seats make a remote starter unnecessary in my opinion.

You being from Canada, I am having a hard time accepting this statement. You think that getting in your car at -30 (f) and just poppin' the seat heater on, is just as good as having your car running for 15 minutes with the seat heaters AND defrost/heat? You must be one of those guys who likes to make things hard on themselves.

No I wouldn't say that but just from past experience, the sum of the whole in terms of the drawbacks, don't make it worth getting another one. The seats do warm quickly, help keep you warm, you dress warmly and the truck warms quicker when driving anyway. For family and kids it's nice to have a starter, but it's mostly just myself so I'd say no on this vehicle.

Oh and I should relate an experience I had. I got locked out once with the vehicle running, it was my fault but I don't like how the remote starter would manipulate the locks when you got out with the vehicle running, it would lock then reopen with a second or two delay. Not a warm and fuzzy hearing the doors lock everytime you get out with the vehicle running and keys inside. That and it just doesn't seem worth it to idle for 10-15 min for a 20 min drive to work.

It has a "H" stamped on the metal part of the key next to the black plastic.

it denotes the cycle of the security implemented into the fob that talks to the ecu. "G" series keys had a weaker security and were easier to program with 3rd party remote starts. "H" keys were a PITA when they first came out and it took about 2-3 months for 3rd party to figure out a way to fool the ecu. I know on the our daughter rav4 we had to use the spare key and tap into ignition switch light ring to fool the vehicle thinking there was a key present.

edit : once they figured out the workaround, the dealer went in and removed the spare key fix and we had a spare to hang on the spare key holder in the house for those just in case situations.

wait until you get way older and your hands cant stand the cold steering wheel even with gloves on. right now my hands are overly sensitive to cold (especially objects) that it hurts the hands.

now a days, I run the remote as needed and to make sure the interior is warm. I can afford to waste the gas. hopefully the next gen 4runner has heated steering wheel. :)

I'll hate it when I'm old and cannot shave with a double edge razor anymore. :(
