Hey guys and gals. New to these forums so just wanted to say hello! This Labor Day weekend I had the pleasure of purchasing my new 2017 Tacoma Double Cab Long Bed TRD Off Road! I've read up on here and came to the realization that for normal, daily use, cold air intake systems are essentially worthless. Amirite??

So, I will basically just replace the stock air filter for now. I inquired at the dealership about the TRD air filter and was quoted about $110. K&N's are $60 at the local AutoZone but I've read that the oil may cause some issues with the mass air flow sensor?? I've also seen people on here say the AFE's are the best. But as I was searching, I couldn't find one for the 17's. Is that the case???

Appreciate any help and responses I can get! Thanks.

We know it's disappointing, but stock filter is great. It does exactly what it needs to do, well, and without fucking anything up.

Lol well OK then. Looks like I'll save my money and think of another mod for my first one for now.

OP, welcome to TW and listen to all these guys - they know of which they speak. The stock filters are actually very good and don't believe all the garbage you are fed by these companies selling snake oil filters that will make all your power troubles go away. I have yet to see anyone prove that any of these filters increase hp on a Taco. Save your money and mod elsewhere. Best of luck to you and once again, welcome aboard. :)

Thank you! I really appreciate it. I have some experience with poker forums so I know exactly how valuable a forum can be. They are a treasure trove of information and I plan on utilizing as much of it as I can.

Any leads on specific threads that you think are the most valuable? That can lead me on the right mod path? Thanks again for the replies!

Stock filter is oiled too for the finer particulates. Don't believe me? Pull the filter and rub your finger on the paper element, you'll get a film of "something" oily on your fingers.

It's just not saturated with the dyed oil the cotton gauze filters have. Stock works great and the part is the same as the tundra filter. If it flows enough for the V8, it's likely fine with our measly 3.5 car engine.

Blue is best! You could get the TRD CAI, but it's pretty much just for looks and slightly different sound.

Blue certainly is the best color!

I'm pretty new here, haven't even lurked for that long. And in that short amount of time I've already seen the divide between the people that say CAI's are worthless money pits for very little, if any, performance upgrade and those that say YOLO. Still not sure which side of the line I'll be on lol.

    HIJACKING! (sorry @MandosTaco )

what about K&N washable filters guys? I know there no performance increase, but in the long run, they would save you $$? as you can wash it yourself and not have to replace it every few months.

No power gains but you can rewash and save some money like said before. If you decide to get one go the dry AFE route. The part number is 31-10247.

If you don't mind fine grit getting into your engine then by all means buy a gauze filter. I bought the K&N hype with a previous vehicle and the air intake was always coated in a fine dust that I don't see in my other cars with paper filters. As everyone else has said stock is best and any money "saved" with cleaning a gauze filter is blown with premature wear. Not to mention it takes 2 days to properly clean and re-oil them. My spare time is worth a lot and washing air filters just isn't that much fun.

When I look up the part number on the AFE website, it says this is for the '14-'16 Tundra with the 5.7L-V8. And when I search by Year, Make and Model, no air filter comes up for that year Tacoma. I'm assuming then, that this will fit on the 2017 Tacoma???
