Okay so please don’t start flaming me (lol!) but I have a 22’ Trail Edition and I LOVE the truck and YES, I did buy the Trail for the slight lift and locking-differential. But after about 12k miles on the truck, I’ve been lusting over going an 1” or 2” higher.

I’ve owned another Tacoma and am aware of the types of lifts out there but just wondering if I could add 5100 shocks and get a 2” raise or to simply go with the spacer route? I know.. I know… Let the flaming begin on spacer lifts but the extent of my off reading is gravel, dirt roads and maybe some moderate stuff. I won’t be rock-crawling or testing its limits.

What would be the most economical way? Add I’m not opposed to doing the 5100’s all around with the added expense either.

    Thanks guys!

    5100s don't lift the rear.

You want cheap, spacers it is.

Personally since you appear to have no functional need, maybe just leave it alone?

I know. Contrarian. That's ok. Someone has to do it. :D

Thanks for the info Bill, and I think a lot of people that get a descent lift, may not really have needed it either! YES, I know LOTS do but you know what I’m saying! Appreciate your insight!

I went the spacer route until I decide on a suspension lift no complaints so far but replacing the needle bearing is on my to-do list even though I haven’t had any problems so far.

Bilsteins 5100s on the top setting, 4runner Gray TRD Pro Sema wheels, 285/70/17 Toyo AT3s, Sumo Bump stops, TRD exhaust, ECGS Clamshell bushing, 1/4 shim for the lean and one inch rear block, OEM Pro grill and garnish OEM TRD Skid plate, TRD CAI, Demon Brackets, Rigid Industries Pro fog lights, OEM Trail Rails sidebars, Diode Dynamics LED SL1 high and low beam lights, OEM Roof racks, Clazzio leather heated seats, Remote Start, TRD Pro shift knob, tinted windows, Rockford Fosgate 4 channel amp for the headunit and sub and amp combo, OEM Puddle lights, OEM tailgate lock, OEM bed mat, LED interior lights, OEM blackout kit for letters, JLT catch can, upgraded 27F toyota True Start battery, Vleds led tail light kit with Pro tail lights, OEM Rave4 side mirrors with convex spotters, just to name a few mods.
Add a 1.5 in tapered block in the rear and some 5100s up on the 4th setting or 5th for that almost leveled look and be done. It will be an improvement over what is there now. Change out the needle bearing while its apart and roll on!

I'd be more worried about the harsher ride the spacers give you. The 5100 Bilstein are a fatter, longer shock that rides even better than the OEM Bilstein Off Road shocks with the added benefit of the Lift. I think they are the best bang for the buck, for comfort & Lift. And no more OEM brake dive.

You could even possibly use your OEM rear shocks with just the 1" block, since the 5100s in the rear dont add Lift, but I'm not sure what rear shocks the Trail comes with....

2" up front, 1" block in rear, gives me 37" all around from the bottom of my black wheel wells, to the ground. NOTE: That includes the 265/75/16 upsized tires)

Thanks for all the info guys! I just went and measured my trail. With my 265/76/16, from ground up to exact middle of the black on the fender flare is 36 1/2”.

I haven’t noticed much difference in the ride but it’s a truck you’ll never get it to ride like a caddie. It’s a three inch leveling kit 3inch spacers up front and 2inch blocks in the back had get longer shocks for the back
