About to move back to the springs this coming December. Running stock tires and wheels and thinking about upgrading when I get there. Leaning towards the SCS F5’s with some wildpeaks. What tires are you guys running that handle well in the snow?

I had Duratracs for a number of years that were alright when they were new but wore poorly and were trash in the winter almost immediately. I got a set of Wildpeaks and they worked great for me so far but I've only got limited miles on them so I can't report how well they hold up in the winter over time/miles. From what I've read they do better in that category though especially when you consider the price differences.

I run Cooper Discoverer RTX and have no complaints, but I'm no tire guru. I bought them because they had a rebate and they looked good on the truck.

I second that on the duratracs. Had some on my 2nd gen and definitely did not feel too great on snow or ice.

Either I've always had horrible tires or I'm just that good of a driver... The stock Goodyears always seemed good. They were surprising during hunting season last year when I tackled a one way dirt road that completely turned to mud.

Best is a set of Winters and a set of Summers.
Second best is one set that is 3Peak certified, BFG K02 for example.

Yeah I plan on keeping the stock tires and wheels for the summer, and the new setup for the winter.

I got Falken Wildpeaks at a great price as my first mod and I believe they are 3 peak certified. Done quite a bit all around and no issues in the snow. Definitely ditch the stock tires after the summer , they are shit in the snow.

Edit: I lied, had a rock puncture out on drive to a trailhead. Had thought I made the wrong decision in tires, but the local lady who patched it said any tire would have had the same issues.

I have since learned to air down where sharp rocks are present

You get a good deal locally? I’m considering getting the wildpeaks in the OEM size because I have the tire protection warranty. So if I damage them they get replaced but gotta be OEM size :(

I got one inch bigger. Bought them from simple tire online during last years memorial day sale for something like $450 shipped.

My next set will probably be Wildpeaks, a couple guys I know run them and report good things year round.

Currently I run Hankook DynaPros ATM on my Tacoma and on the ladies RAV4, and they're good too. Great for an all season tire in snow, good price too and good experience with wear and all.

Neither are aggressive offroad tires, but if you get them in a C or E rating, they'll be plenty tough enough for some off road use, yet still have those good Colorado, May 21st snow storm, weather capabilities. If you need a more aggressive offroad tire though, I hear good things about Cooper STT Maxx, a little more aggressive.

I use 285 KO2s lr c presently, they've been great off road and all winter.
If you're going up in size, to a 285, I'd go to 17s as there are more load range options.
Thanks to the new Jeep Gladiator, you can now get 285/70-17 Falken AT3w and the MT in a load c. Lighter and better for gas mileage if that's a concern.
    good luck!

Seriously, I have driven all over the state and never really had an issue given accounting for the conditions.

    What I've run

    Best in Snow
    • Falken Ziex S/TZ04 highway tires -- due to the excessive amount of siping
    Good in snow
    • Hercules Ironman A/T
    • General Grabber AT2
    • BFG KM2 after siping
    • BFG KO1
    Adequate in snow
    • BFG KM2
    • Dunlop Mud Rover
    • Cooper STT (old KM1-like pattern)
    Poor in snow
    • Super Swamper TSL

I won't recommend a specific tire, but I would say the majority of us run ATs vs MTs. There's a mud season as snow melts, but the majority of the terrain is in my opinion better conquered by an AT. Coopers, KO2s, and duracraps are the ones I see most often.

I'm using Toyo Open Country A/T IIs currently, and they have impressed me. Won't hold a candle to a dedicated snow tire, of course, but I'm not breaking traction unless I try.
