Shit paint, shit cover, or some combination of the two.
If the paint came off with the cover every time one was lifted from a car in Miami we'd all know about it.

Yep, obviously poor paint or I wouldn't have had it at a body shop to be painted, Duh......................
Just sharing the experience as a warning as to what can happen and stating I will never use another outdoor cover. You do what you want.

Do use indoor covers on my Corvettes, however ONLY if car finish and cover are clean. Otherwise cover will scratch finish just from putting it on and taking it off.

So since we're talking about a late model Tacoma here, your observation would have little impact on the OP's question or answer, correct?

Online permission from strangers always makes me giggle. Maybe I'm easily amused, IDK.

Taking the cover on and off multiple times will scratch the clear coat. Speaking from experience here. I would recommend one of these, but maybe anchor it with some concrete or sand in 5 gallon buckets if you live in a windy climate.

No incorrect, as though it most likely would not lift newer paint steaming under cover could damage a newer finish. Just stating what did happen/can happen as a warning, thought you seem to have a problem understanding that.

This is why I emphasized (and linked) a good quality cover that will indeed NOT do the damage you are referring to. And I'm not just throwing this out there hoping some poor bastard will take my internet advice, I'm using the linked product.
Shit products, will of course, yield shit results. Given your experience, surely we can agree on that.

How does it get secured into the ground for long periods of time? Does it hold up to high winds? This was my main concern with using a solution like this..
Storage unit is gonna set me back like $2K for the time I'm gone. For that, I could let it collect all the waterspots from being outside and just get a new paint job when I get back. I probably can't set it on jackstands in case of earthquakes, but would lowering the pressure in the tires/flattening them help anything? I do have a compressor to air em back up

Rain doesn’t leave hard water spots. Those are caused by calcium and magnesium in groundwater.

Haahha if only it were that easy. It depends on your climate, and Hawaiian rainwater has very little difference from the hosewater. If I don't wipe down my truck when I get home after a good rain, half of the water coverage on the hood alone will spot.

I'll even do it on trails If it isn't dirty to where I risk marring the finish.

Every car here has waterspots all over. It's basically accepted, but not by me:p

It’s a truck. Park it outside and wash it
    When you return.

Waterspots don't really work like that, my man. someone can type out a more complete answer, but they basically eat your paint. If you want proof (and since your truck is just a truck), cover it in hose water, come back to it in a few days and try to wash it off. That's what the rain is like here

Just because it's a truck, doesn't mean it can't be a nice truck:)
