I finally joined the Tacoma family this past Monday by purchasing a 2019 Tacoma SR truck. I luv it!

As an added layer of protection in the event of fender benders, I will be buying and installing a dash cam camera. I noticed that my truck has a built in mount next to rearview mirror for a Go Pro camera.

Any recommendations for a dash cam?

Note: my 2019 Tacoma SR truck does not have an auto dimming mirror, thus no power at the mirror.

I'd like to stay at or below $200.

    Thanks!

I removed those annoying stickers on the sun visor.
I went with the Viofo A229 Pro. It's not cheap, but the image quality is fantastic. Front, rear, and inside cameras. The inside camera probably isn't necessary, but I figured it'll be nice to have if he other guy ever accuses me of being on the phone.

Been using it for about a year and a half, with no issues.

Dashcams, at least the ones known to the US, are changing always. US once somewhat laughed at other countries (Russia comes to mind) where lawsuits are so common they have used dashcams there for a couple of decades.

The first Garmin models did not appeal to me. They were too sensitive to bumps n the roads and you could not make them less sensitive. And the startup sequence was 30 seconds long which is OK for a GPS but not a dsahcam.

Now people love their Garmin mini dashcams. The available product offerings change regularly.

The garmin minis are junk. bought one, gave out in 6 months used their warranty and they sent me a refurbished one and the image quality is terrible.

I've had two Rexing dash cams in use for over 5 years. Using the 12V Dongar mirror adapter for clean install. Was even able to modify the mounting base to fit the GoPro mount. Both Cameras use capacitors instead of batteries so they have worked flawlessly in -30C to +30C temps. This was after trying two Garmin cams that sucked ass.

Even in 1080P I can read plates a good enough distance away. I'd buy them again, or the similar Viofo units they are based off of if I had to replace them. I'm sure they have all improved a good bit in 5 years. I remember having alot of trouble deciding on something reputable at the time. All I know is I much prefer the wedge shaped units. Use the SD cards the manufacturers recommend to a tee. Dash cams eat up cheap cards. Cheers
