We Have gone from a low of $1.33 to $1.69 today. That is almost a 30% increase. Sucks

What about syntheic oil and lubricants, or using a lighter oil but I read you need to be careful when doing this.

going to synthetics will make your MPG go in the right direction. The cost and frequency of the changes might offset any $$ gains you thought you had though.

to OP: add a couple pounds to each tire (3-4 psi). not sure if it'll help around town, but it should make a small difference on the hwy.

You quoted a post over 2 months old.... It's up over $2 now with the cheapest place I've found cycling between $1.97 and $1.99.

Ok. Just thought maybe you thought gas was still that cheap here. Those prices only lasted for a couple weeks before slowly creeping back up.

    - tire inflation . use upper end of recommended range
    - keeping speed down . theres a noticible difference between 60mph and 75
    - clean oil .
    - mid grade gasoline . premium is a waste of $ for octane level thats not required . ive tried and documented all 3 grades over several tankfuls and similar driving. get 1mpg better on average with mid, and same for premium. Mostly steady state driving on highway

I agree too. Just started commuting to work too about 3 weeks ago and absolutely love it. It only takes me maybe extra half an hour per day but I'm outside, have a decent excersice every day and save on fuel. My day round trip comes to almost 50km so If I keep this up I will save around $800 in the next 4-5 months in fuel only. I should have done this years ago. Best thing is I ride maybe 10 blocks in residential area and the rest is all on bike trails in the river valley:)

For actual fuel savings I shift around 2000rpm, drive in 5th even in town as long as I'm traveling atleast 60km/h. Lately I'm trying leaving it in gear even when I'm slowing down instead of coasting or downshifting and my average improved a bit already.

1.) The way you drive, watch the Tach and how much you push down on the gas pedal.

2.) Before when i had the stock muffler i usually get 14-16MPG in the city, now im getting 17+ with my new Aero Turbine...and i hit 20MPG on the last fill up. The reason for this is now I don't have to accelerate as hard to get up to speed. Before with the stock exhaust I'd usually climb up to about 2,000RPM, because anything lower just felt to sluggish :D. Now i can move about the city at 1,500-1,000RPM and that definitely has saved some gas. Also when I'm cruising around the city with the windows down, i can listen to my exhaust note and lighten up on the pedal as much as i can to maintain a speed.

3.) "Coasting" to a stop. Say if you're about to reach a stop light, and from a distance you already see it has turned red, let off the gas pedal and coast to a stop, avoid using the brakes (i mean, you still have to, but you shouldn't have a long stopping distance by the time you reach the light...) The reason for this is because the fuel injectors are shut off when you let off the gas pedal and air just cycles through the engine. If you have the ScanGauge or anything that reads instantaneous MPG, it should be giving you a read out of 99MPG. As Jeremey Clarkson from top gear put it "the more you use your brakes the more your wasting money." And not only are you saving gas, you can reduce wear on your shoes, rotors and pads. But make sure to observe your surroundings, you dont want to get into an accident from slowing down too early and the idiot behind you isn't paying attention.

Remove secondary filter only if out of warranty. No add on for $200 is going to increase MPG enough to pay for it in 4/5 years, don't care who says it. So change UR driving habits and cruise at 70 on super slabs.
I get 22 in South East Texas highways / 18-19 in town.
Stock 2012 2.7 Dbl. Cab. Short bed SR5 only.

$5 of coroplast and some creative application to the upper grill in the winter time will easily pay for itself in 2 tanks of fuel. Minor mpg benefit to a smaller block in the summer too.

ultragauge is still under $100 and can help teach better driving habits.

    Other than that, correct...

it's old thread day today i guess

I wonder about putting it in neutral and coasting. My wife has an 09 Corolla Xrs that tells instantaneous fuel consumption, when coasting to slow down or foot off the pedal down a hill in gear it reads 0L/100km consumption, if I put it in neutral it reads over 1L/100km (speed dependant). I assume that when spinning the motor under compression the fuel shuts off, when coasting in neutral fuel is used to idle the engine. Probably the same in my truck.

I found the best way to get 6L/100km (40mpg) is to leave the truck at home and drive my old 98 Corolla when I don't need a truck. I put 2000km on the Corolla last month and 500km on the truck. The fuel savings easily pays for the added insurance on the Corolla and as an added bonus my truck will last forever.

You may save gas by putting it in neutral and coasting but in doing so you are roasting your transmission! Save .10$ in gas to fry a multi-thousand dollar transmission......NO THANKS!
