Eh, some of us grew up from nothing

Others were spoiled rotten and don't know the value of a dollar

Seems this kid falls in the latter of the two; yeah I spend money on dumb shit but a vehicle is a big purchase

Last new car purchase I did was for my ex (when we were still together) but financed it for the 0% and still paid it off early cause fuck debt

I thought about that, but he is still on the hook for the Gladiator loan either way. And the current book value may not be enough to make the cost of buying another car worth it.

Realistically, this guy isn't going to buy an old Corolla or Civic for under $10k, so he'd end up with even more debt and a cheaper car.

Edited: I know nothing about gap insurance.

Find a dealer that has a lot of dealerships across multiple states.

They will be able to get you the truck the quickest.

But! You will still be having to settle for the random trim or just keep waiting.

You won’t get to spec it out, you’ll have to buy it as built.

    I doubt there’s a lot of options a pro doesn’t get anyway

Just pick a color and take your spanking for being first.

    Or…. Keep waiting. Or…. Buy a Chevy

Or…. Just keep posting funny threads- for our entertainment

I guess because he is upside down in the gladiator, or he confused this thread with the wrecked 3rd gen one.

    Made no sense

Gap is incorporated into one's loan (if purchased) and requires no separate payment. But generally speaking, if we're talking a 5 year loan...financing those extra $500 would equate to $9/month

Not sure how under $10/month can make or break someone

As for a lease, gap is built in

Does he not have gap insurance? Someone else called it out from the first post.

I guess either way, if he does have it, and goes upside down on another loan, then he'd still have it.

Never had gap, I thought it was a couple hundred a month. I guess I'll have to read up on it.

Huh, today I learned, average of $60 per year. Interesting that people talk about it like it's a make or break situation (not on here, people I've known).

Gap only covers the difference (most times up to a specific amount) over the value of the vehicle in the event of a total loss.

Are you suggesting to the OP that he commits some sort of insurance fraud

    Not at all, no.

Gap's total cost is as low as $300 (if you finance for a shorter term) and can cost as much as $900 (if the dealer marked it up from actual cost).

That total is added to the amount financed which becomes a few dollars total per month over the life of the loan.

    Cool, now you know!

Yeah I've heard some wild "purchase stories" where I refrain from telling people my old background.

It especially gets blown out of proportion when it was someone's friend or relative that bought a vehicle; kind of like a rumor that changes from one person to the next.

Just him and I; he mentioned it, I questioned it and just provided info on how it works.

Okay, so at the end of the day it just becomes part of the loan amount, and it no longer matters what that loan is for, it's just debt now.

Being good at math doesn't always equate to being good at financials.

And I've worked with some great software folks that had very limited common sense.

Everyone I work with is a phd in something STEM-y, I get it. But typically an educated person would have a basic understanding of negative equity, something the OP only came around to recently.

It's all a big pile of debt.

And when someone cancels something that was purchased (and added to that loan), it gets prorated and whatever refund is coming, is paid towards the finance company.

For instance, you buy a truck and you bought a maintenance plan for 5 years. It cost you $1500.

You're 2 years into your loan, and you've used some of those oil changes.

You decide to cancel said plan, and the prorated amount could be about $900 minus a cancellation fee (sometimes applicable).

The vehicle was financed with say, Ally. The cancelling dealer cancels your plan, waits for funds, and proceeds to send a check towards your payoff to Ally.

In the event that the vehicle was paid off early (whether paid off early, traded in, or sold), the cancellation refund goes directly to the person that bought said plan.
