I have a 2020 Taco TRD Pro that I basically never drove due to COVID. It has extremely low miles and many premium mods. I'm absolutely not interested in gouging anyone based on current supply chain issues, and yet I'd be kind of a chump to not get a decent "market" price for it, given that dealers still seem to be marking up new ones and free-enterprise, Merica and all that.

Rather than doing the Blue Book valuation or dealer wholesale route, it seems like an auction or private sale (Craigslist?) is most likely to find me a buyer in the current climate. Any advice or recent experience on this?

    Thanks.

Just be aware that mods for the most part don’t mean much

This. They only usually might mean something for a private sale IF you find the right buyer. An auction or dealer won't care about your long travel pre runner zombie apocalypse build.

    Oh look, another mod....
The pros and cons of privately selling your truck:

    Pros:
You can get more money for the truck overall!
The mods you add to it will help the vehicle sale and you may recoup 100% of the parts and labor, but do not count on this.
You will find a buyer who will like and enjoy the exact truck you are selling.

    Cons:
No tax break from not trading it in.
You have to deal with some guy trying to get a car loan or personal loan. No one is going to have $40k in cash when they come see you to buy your truck. There's a lot of paperwork to fill out.
You'll get a lot of lookie loo's and tire kickers.
You will not get as much as a private sale. Your mod's won't mean shit to a dealer, most will knock off money from the price if they see mods.

I would put it back to stock and sell the mods here in the classifieds. Then enter the VIN into Carvana and see what they'll pay. If you then decide to sell privately I would put it on the forum in the vehicle classifieds, and if you can tolerate it put it on Marketplace.

    Thanks guys.

The "mods" are just things like Falken Wildpeak AT tires, Prinsu roof rack, Retrax bed cover, Cali Raised rock sliders and RTT riser, bed mat, complete vF Tune kit, etc... not going to take those off and part them out as I don't have time and those are all pretty well known additions with value to an educated buyer. I agree that a dealer/wholesaler doesn't care about mods and is just looking to flip it for a few bucks, so a private sale (not in any hurry) is probably best for both me and the buyer.

So with that, what is the best way to establish valuation? Book value is pointless these days, and I'm also not really interested in making up some silly inflated price and trolling just to see who bites. I have not kept an eye on dealer stock levels at all, but in my area, these weren't even available, so asking MSRP plus a little additional for the mods would still be a considered a decent deal. I'm completely out of touch with the market so just curious how you guys would approach this...

It's really easy, I'd do it the same way that I would have before the market went wonky.

I'd compare comps from what's selling at the used lots near me, today. That's who I'm competing with on a private sale, therefore that's how I set my price.

Can't stress enough how bad of a decision it is to sell the truck WITH those mods on it... deff. would take all of them off and get it as close to stock as possible. You are looking for a unicorn buyer if you expect to get any added value from them which means no competition which means lower sale price than what you might be able to get otherwise. There are so many people that will pay you at least half of what you spent on those mods if you throw them on FB marketplace or CL especially since it sounds like you never used them. Lots of folks (myself included) only shop for stock or very close to stock vehicles. I'm likely selling my Taco as well in the next few weeks and I'm even removing the factory Toyota mods I've done like TRD Pro grill, running boards, roof rack, bed mat, black exhaust tip, cab bed rail, etc. because they will add literally nothing to the sale price and on their own easily worth another $500-$600. If you are planning to buy another vehicle after selling, keep in mind you generally have to sell for a few grand higher privately than what the dealer offers you to make up for the tax break. I've done both trade and private many times over and generally I find I might net out $1,000 better with private sale than trade in + tax break. Not always worth the hassle but if you aren't in a hurry might as well give it a shot just can be a time suck... much more so than time spent taking your mods off most likely! lol

Mods don't mean anything. In fact, they can hurt the value sometimes. I just traded in my rig for a great price plus a hefty tax credit. My time and effort are worth something. So I was very pleased. Much easier than trying to sell it.

That said.....the dealer was willing to "load up" in it because he said it was nice to see a bone stock, well cared for truck. They're always worth the most money......his words, not mine.

Toyota gives the lowest trade-in values in the entire industry. He definitely should not go to Carvana but if he wants top dollar for his vehicle then CarMax is the way. They are offering at least 10% more than Carvana/Vroom.

    I guess it just depends.
Carvana and carmax were the same when I checked. The used Toyota dealer was 4k more than both of them

I sold a Tundra and Highlander 4 months ago. CarMax was a couple thousand dollars better than Carvana on both. The area Toyota dealers were at least an additional couple thousand dollars lower than Carvana.

OK, so it sounds like the consensus is to remove the mods and part those out separately. That's going to be a huge PITA for things like rock sliders and roof rack, and my time is worth more than I can sell those for, but I get it. I do have pink slip in hand and the truck is 100% mint so will not be difficult to sell, just hard to find a legit buyer with that kind of cash in pocket. Thanks for the advice and wish me luck!
