I mean it doesn’t hurt to try, you can’t catch a fish without a line in the water. You might find the right buyer while you start to strip parts off. I get what you’re saying though- what’s your time worth? Stripping and flipping doodads isn’t fun either.

Even to at least remove the easier mods you'll still net some extra moolah for selling those.

Here's a thought for ya. Why don't you leave the mods on the truck and post them for sale. Then remove them once you have a buyer, possibly even having the buyer help remove them if you don't mind someone else touching your truck. It would help with removing and storing large items like a roof rack and sliders.

Just a heads up for people considering Carvana/Carmax…a couple of months ago Carmax gave me $6k more for my wife’s GX460 than Carvana quoted. Just food for thought, do not settle on one or the other, get quotes from both and go with the higher one.

OP, I would do just that and as others mentioned remove and sell mods separately.

I would get a quote from Carmax/Carvana/etc as is to see what they say. Who knows, maybe it will be high enough to cover what you spent on the mods. Then you can be done with it.

Maybe you can share with us the data that shows that Toyota gives the lowest trade-in values and how you came to know this? I wasn't aware that the manufacturer had any say in the used car business. I thought that each dealer was independently owned and when it comes to the used car market that they were on their own? It sounds like what you are saying is that I will get the same trade in offer from all Toyota dealers?

Maybe just means Toyota dealers usually offer less. In my experience, they were way lower than Carmax, Vroom, and Carvana last year when I sold my 2011 Tacoma and my 2015 4Runner.

My personally experience was my local dealer was several hundred dollars above what CarMax shot me. Plus I had a $1500 tax at the dealer that I wouldn't have had at CM.

Could be, but I have never seen any dealer as a rule under cut trades. It is a true supply and demand business. I have had the same dealer offer me a great deal on one purchase then go back and get offered garbage. If they don't need your car, they don't have to offer anything. If they need a sale, they have the flexibility to make the call.

Aren't you the genius I absolutely eviscerated in the insurance thread?

As we know from the previous thread you have a hard time rubbing your two brain cells together to interpret any data shown to you. So get off your fat ass, walk up the stairs from your mom's basement, go to Toyota and see what they will give you for whatever rusted junk you drive, then compare it to Carvana and others. Report back! Okay bud?

Oh, and listen, I'm all for having a fan on this site, but I do sense that you're real tense? If you need someone to talk to, spill whatever lies heavy on your heart, I'm here for my #1 fan on TW! Drop your phone number in my DM's, we will get your mental frame straightened right out! No insurance auction for this guy! You'll be good as new! ;)

    In March of this year:

2011 Jeep Wrangler KBB valued @ $15,000+ trade in & $16,500+ private party

Subaru dealer offered my daughter $14,000 on trade in IF she spent $600 to fix front end issue. $13,400 without the fix. NO IDEA of any tax break???

Sold to Carvana for $19,200 with NO issues at all - made appointment with them, got check, deposited it, they picked it up next day, DONE DEAL, PIECE OF CAKE

30% more money from Carvana than dealer trade in offer

Same. On average about $2500 more than Toyota has offered. We sold our RAV4 Prime in March to CarMax for almost $12k over what we paid, we didn't even try to sell it to Toyota because we knew they were going to give us a low number. They we're terrible pre-pandemic especially, the only reason they are giving people numbers even close to Carvana or CarMax over the past 24 months is because they were forced to by Carvana and others.

I would put it on Cars and Bids website if really interested in getting best price. Set your reserve where you want it and see what happens. Just beware you may have to ship it (at buyers expense) Unbelievable what these things are going for.

I'm in the same boat. About to put the Tacoma up. If you plan private party, place your ad on as many free websites as you can. Your mods seem pretty tasteful and it is truly subjective as to who will pay for those. As mentioned, typically dealers will not recognize value towards your mods. It sounds like time is on your side. KBB the value and mark it up a couple of grand. If it doesn't sell, you can always lower it over time.

I also got some bad quotes from Carmax and Carvana. I sold a Lexus in 2020. a private dealer ended up paying me $1,500 over the Carmax quote. Carmax's quote at the time was below low bluebook trade in. Carvana was the absolute worst. They are always the lowest. I entered my VIN and it came back at <$29k. This is for a TRD Sport 4x4 with all the options and only 10k miles. Carvana seems like they quote about $10k-$15k below market. And I am in the Bay Area, CA which is one of the most expensive markets to live in. I would sell to a private dealer before doing Carmax or Carvana. Try a more premium dealer like Lexus. Or hit up multiple Toyota dealers and bid them against each other.

Just what he said. Kelly blue book will give you a cash offer and usually 3 dealers will contact you to buy it.
