i've seen several sets of HREW sliders get bent up into the body of a truck...i wouldnt recommend HREW to anyone as far as sliders go...or when building a cage...

THe reasone I asked is because...

I found an interesting article on Marlin Crawlers archives that illustrates the differences between "DOM" and "HREW" Apparently what you think is a stronger material is actualy an inferior material.

According to the test they did they tested a competitors "DOM" which was not American steel and although was DOM was an inferior steel quality compared to theAmerican HREW that they use.

Unfortunelty I can't find the pictures asociated with the article. Those that run "DOM" sliders are you actually running DOM of a higher quality?

    The writeup

well it seems to me that in those they were testing the ability of it to crush or dent.. as tiger said before most DOM will dent easier than HREW however it wont bend as easy. i'm not really concerned if my slider gets a dent (actually the DS does have one in the bottom) but i DONT want it to bend up into my rocker....

in any case even if you wanted to go with HREW i still recommend 4xinnovations to people as his prices are hard to beat and he is a stand up guy!!

adam is a super nice guy...i remember meeting him at takeover...however his sliders are the ones ive seen bend :anonymous:

ive also seen a couple instances where his bumpers dont fit on the trucks...

**EDIT** ive never bought anything from him though so my comments are just hearsay pretty much...i like the guy personally though

haha... well then... all i can vouch for are my sliders and my experiences with them... i know i have put them to the test plenty of times and they have held up beautifully. short of that i dont know anyone running anything else of his so i couldnt comment on that.

and you having them is why i havent said anything previously because i KNOW you put yours thru the paces

i suspect he just had a bad batch of steel maybe...or personal issues that caused his work to suffer because all of this was within a close time frame

yea anything is possible. i know whenever i get really mad i have to quit working. for some reason when i'm mad i dont seem to be able to weld worth a crap. ohh well. but anyways, yea i have beat on mine pretty good. the one dent i have is from falling off a rock and dropping about 2 1/2 ft onto another rock. it hit hard enough to put a small dent in the bottom of the slider and cause a deformation in the frame rail  but the sliders still didnt flex up and contact the rocker so i was :D

Crushing or denting will also give you an indication of the materials overall strenth. If it dents easily it will bend easily, but then again I'm not a metallurgist so I say this with as an assumption.

If one manufacturer makes theirs out of HREW and people claim they stand up to the abuse then whats the harm in using it, especially when it's WATRD.

i'm not saying that HREW isnt stong enough for use as sliders.... i'd say something like 90% of all sliders out there are made of HREW and most hold up just fine..

i dont disagree...i wouldnt argue with much of what WATRD says...

i just know that high quality DOM will dent easier than high quality HREW...but vice versa on bending

To throw mud on the fire... The first set of sliders I had on my rig did distort. I had most of the weight of the rig, sitting on the front tips of them, (don't ask) and left it sitting like that so I could hop out and have a look. Sure enough, the slider forward of the front leg had gently bent up, contacting the body and making a perfect indentation that I have to this day. Once the weight was off them, they returned to shape, leaving me with that dent.

Once I was home, they were cut off and I called Jason Demello to get a set of his on the way. I have since repeated the experiment and the deflection is minimal. Certainly not enough to repeat the performance.

Design? Material? I cannot say. I can't really say that I paid that much attention to the debate until now. All I know is that these are better than the ones I had.

For those more knowledgeable in these things, here's what I have now: http://www.demello-offroad.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=27_21&products_id=44

How important are the gussets on a slider? I got
mine welded on today but I don't think the guys saw the sliders I left in the bed with the rest of the pieces.

Well i'm a prerunner so I'm not really on the rocks and thus the lack of upward stress on them. I'm considering leaving them off as they're
mainly for protecting the body from rocks that my tires kick up and for pushing me away from rocks when turnin corners. I dunno.

I'm using the weld-on slider from Trail-Gear. One of the least expensive options out there. I just put a set on my Tacoma after almost 3 years of having a set of them on my Land Cruiser. I've dropped hard onto them in my cruiser numorous times, used them to pivot the entire truck many times, used them to slide over very large boulders with nearly the full weight of the truck on them. Not a single bend in the HREW after all of that. I figure if they hold up that well under my heavy cruiser they'll do just fine on my lighter Tacoma that likely won't be wheeled as hard.

These are the 67" ones from Trail-Gear on my Land Cruiser. 3 legs and gussets at the frame

78" ones for my DC Tacoma being put together. 4 legs with frame plates and gussets.
