I had a 2000 and I now have a 2002. You cant go wrong with either. My 2000 was bought back by Toyota with 221,000 miles on it. I gave it hell everytime I drove it...and it always performed well. My 2002 currently has 207,000 on it and is still a smooth ride. I bought it from my dad who drives like an old lady, so it still has a good bit of life left in it.

manual hubs suck ass if you only need 4x4 to deal with road conditions (snow). I hated getting stuck in my 84. Stuck on a hill was the worst:frusty:. Turn truck off because its manual, get out of truck, get yelled at by the people behind you that you just fcked. Down the road..Hmm I should not be in 4x4 here. The road is dry. Let me get the F out of the truck again.

Hmm, locking vs. auto hubs.. I've had/have both benefits of manual hubs: True ,less to go wrong , if I was going anywhere I might need 4x I'd just lock the hubs without engaging the transfer as soon as I get offroad, no biggie, advantages of auto locking hubs: I love being able to go into 4x on the fly its all done Manually when I grab the lever for transfer case......:D

I hear what you are saying about not engaging the transfer case. No power was being delivered to the front axle, but with the axles locked on a dry surface I thought that was a big no no. Turning must have been a bit tough. The wheels want to rotate at the same rate. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

If your front axle is locked, than yes. But if its an open diff than no... I think.

I'd say 04. That's the last model toyota made that truck. You'd figure that Toyota would hae weed out all the problems from the past years. I have an 04 and I love it.
