I know when I bought mine, the only requirements were 4x4, low miles, and best deal. For me the best deal ended up being $16,500 for an 07 with 72,000 miles that had belonged to a retired old fella that went to a new F150. I was happy to take it off of his hands with all the maintenance records. It was unmodified and showing a few signs of non-use. That was in 2015. I felt like it was a deal. Others may not. Regardless, deals are out there if you aren't pressed to buy right now. If I could save $10,000 buying a truck with the same mileage a few model years back, I'd buy it.

I got the sport because i heard it rode better on the roads... I kinda wished i got the Off Road because i ended up swapping out the suspension a few weeks after i bought it.

The sport is an appearance package. Color keyed body parts. Scoop, mirror turn signals. Looks sweet, but all the functional toys are in the Off Road. Locker, ATrac. Just a matter of taste. I still love my sport though, but im looking to add a arb locker in the future to bring myself up to snuff when I do go offroad.

If you are going to wheel, def get the SB. The LB would be a trail limo.

    Form follows function
05-06 had some head gasket issues
09+ had some significant tech improvements on the OR.
The older you go the more likely to have rust issues. Check the frame.
Like everyone said 13-15 are best but not likely to find it for under 20k. Next best is 09+. Good luck.

My buddy got an '09 double cab 4x4 v6 SR5 with AT, it came with a leer cap. ~40k miles for just about $20k recently.

Take your time, if you can, and you should be able to find something under $20k. I bought an '08 access cab 4x4 v6 SR5 with AT for $17k two years ago but it had close to 65k miles on it, and obviously your looking for a double cab so it'd be a bit more than that.

Not to go off-topic.. but why are people saying 2011 because no emissions? Did a law change somewhere? My 2011 needs to get registered next month. Do I NOT have to go to those stupid shacks and waste money.

    Yay

I've had a '12 (totaled) and a '13 (love dis bish). MY12 had a fair shit of bugs with the non-entune stereo / Bluetooth function. Toyota eliminated some of the MY12 steering wheel controls in MY13 and also took them out of the bluetooh/stereo....all for the better.

MY13 has a clock in the dash, the mirror as mentioned above still had all the goodies, none of the MY12 stereo/bluetooth issues and the backup cam is in the rear view...where it should be.

MY13 TRD OR had the 2+1 leaf pack just FYI.

Why are we not including the 2012's here? 99.9% the same truck as the 2013-15. New front clip and all the same goodies..
    Just asking?

You still need a smog check. In 2012 they added a smog pump and some have had hat pump fail which is $$$ to replace.

FYI: Just bought a 12 dclb trd sport with 30k miles on it for $26 Canadian from a dealer this month, in Ontario.

Has the mirror goodies, front clip upgrade, non entune radio with rear camera in the mirror.

I had a Ranger that made it 330,000 miles between me and the original owner.

When maintenance became too much of a pain in the ass I replaced it with a 2015 Tacoma. I did not want to buy a new truck but what they were asking for used ones was crazy! Anyways, I think the 12 or 13 through 15 trucks look best (when ever they did the facelift). I have not yet had any problems but as other people pointed out the later years have some additional 'features' that add complexity. I think the backup camera is great, but I would prefer it did not have a smog pump waiting to fail and cost me money.

been quite a few reports of the 2012's having moisture issues within the air pump / air pump valves due to them not having the shutdown purge like the 2013's do.

I bought my 2007 TRD OR DCSB, w/72k miles, for $20k in April/May 2010(including TT&L). I've done nothing but routine maintenance and replace TPMS sensors...except for some mods(armor, stereo, sound deadening/dampening, and OME F/R suspension with Dakar leafs).

I don't plan on ever selling my truck.

If you've got a buddy who can search the dealer auctions, do that. I don't know what's best, but the only thing I like better in newer models is the interior.

    This.
This is exactly right. for 20k, don't bother looking at a 2012 or newer.
these little trucks cost more than a same year full size truck.
    but we love them

I have an 05 4x4 dbl 4.0 6spd. its a base model, with no electronics or fancy options. just how I like it.

My 2011 came with a free lifetime engine warranty from Toyota. Only problems I've had with the truck - and they have been few - were caused by insufficient operator headspace.
