I was driving down the highway at about 70mph and my bestop softtop literally flys up and off the bed of my truck lol. I look in my rear view and see it flying in the wind, luckily it lands in the emergency lane. I'm able to pull over and throw it back in with a strap. The metal frame bent. I had it for a year with no probs. I'm sure I had the c clamps down tight. 20200618_043056.jpg

I’ve done 80-100mph (desert road) with my Softopper on without an issue. I’ve heard some oddball things about Bestop and some bad customer service when I called them.

Maybe you just need better clamps?

Bestop was selling 2nd get tops to 3rd gens. Apparently there's a redesign out. Not sure I believe it since I havent seen for myself.

I've had two different Bestop Supertops over the years and never had any issue, nor heard of one.
While it could have been an extreme gust that caused the issue, the most likely explanation is something got fouled up during installation. The rear clamps are a little tricky.

I've had both, and they both work (ahem) flawlessly on the 3rd Gen. The newer version is indeed a bit nicer.

The fitment is shit with the 2nd gen version on the 3rd gen because of the pocket by the rear cab window creates a nice spot for wind to grab.

Was there any part of the clamps left on the bed rails? Checking the parts you recovered should give you a idea of what failed and cause it to fly off.

Nope. The 80 mph wind sheared the shitty generic c clamps. 20170501_204652.jpg

Yeah... tried my 2nd gen Bestop on my 3rd. It can work but it stuck up about an inch or two above the height of the cab on the 3rd gen. Read a few other stories about it flying off the truck at higher speeds. Didn't want to take a chance so I just bought the new 3rd gen specific Bestop. Looks better. Works better.

And this is the area that creates a great little pocket for wind resistance. This was adjusted all the way possible towards the cab. Again this is the 2nd gen version on the 3rd before they actually made a redesign and stopped selling the wrongly label Besttops.

I always cut out that clear vinyl between the topper and cab, so maybe it's not as much of an issue

Yeah the clamps were bent along with the actual metal frame that lays on the top of the bed sides
