Yes. Because to some people a city is a post office with a stop sign and a round about. To others it is manhattan at 8am Rushhour. Either with yield vastly different results

I definitely get better fuel mileage on the highway than the city. Maybe the OP’s highways have lots of long inclines to suck that gas up. In 2 years of owning the truck, I consistently get 20-21 mpg on the highway usually staying between about 65-70 mph, and I get 16-17 around town with lots of idling at stop lights. That’s with a small lift, 32s, and a topper.

Sometimes I think, man this new Tacoma doesn’t really get much better fuel economy than my 25 year old 4runner, but then I remember that my Tacoma has about twice the power and still gets an MPG or 2 better.

    How is that possible?

You will get the best MPGs going 50-55 mph on the highway.

They are just arguing for the sake of arguing.
They want to debate semantics about what constitutes a “city”, when what applies to the majority of drivers is what everyone else is talking about: short duration stop-n-go vs. longer, highway speed trips.

Maybe they just wanted an excuse to brag about how much smarter they are than their friends’ wife

Cities here have well over 10k population. They gotta mean towns that have far less with one main highway through it.

    City vs. Highway?

I think what was being inferred was city speeds vs. highway speeds not city driving vs. highway driving. My experience tells me best mileage is between 45 and 55 mph running steady with no interuptions and minimal inclines.

Cities are all stop and good driving that i've been in. How can that equate to better gas mileage than cruising down a highway? Most here are not that stupid.

It's all about how fast you go on the highway. I get 19-20 in town. I get anywhere from 17-20 on the highway. But I'm going 75-80 mph.

BPfishing. Do you live in the Texas hill country? Could it be the up and downs cutting your highway mileage? I'm getting in the low 20s on Indiana flatlands with a stock 2016 sport.

This was also my experience recently after taking my first long road trip in my stock ‘22 trail edition. Was seeing 22mpg in the 50-65mph range, and 19ish mpg running errands around “town.”

Drove down the eastern seaboard and while keeping up with traffic 70+ mph the best I could get was 18mpg. Saw a lot of 16mpg or worse when really hooking it through the hilly and less developed areas.

I chalk it up to exponentially bad aero doing anything over 70mph and a fully loaded bed.

I did the same trip a month before in my v6 1st gen and averaged 21mpg, but I rarely go faster than 65mph in that truck.

Thats weird, in the cities here its all 25-35 mph 40 in places tops. You have traffic light after traffic light, same for stop signs on side streets. Best i can hope for is 18 mpg. Driving on the highways at 70-75 mph i'll get 23, and change all day long. You must have something very different to your truck done that it would be that poor on the highway.

I get better gas mileage driving in the city, 16-18mpg.

    Y’all are 10 mph apart … 65 yields like 22 mpg… 70 is like 20, 75 is 18 and 80 is 16

OP - I am in central Texas as well. I have similar results. I typically get better mileage around town (around 20) versus highway driving (will range from 17 to 20). As others have said, speed has a factor (below 70 yields better mileage). However, I think the wind plays a bigger factor. If I am driving into a headwind, the mileage takes a hit. Conversely, a tailwind will push me to 20 mpg and better.

I don't understand how far off my estimated fuel mileage can be usually it says between 7.7-8.5L per 100km but that is close to 30 mpg. Most of my buddys Tacoma's show anywhere from 12-15L per 100 km. I do drive pretty easy on the pedal.

Is your truck a stick? Mine is similar. Leaving Virginia Beach's flatness and 55 mph speed limits means 75 mph driving, gradual uphill the whole way, and 17mpg if I'm lucky. The manual Tacoma has a different gear ratio, which is cool for hauling, off-roading and putting bigger tires on it, but it makes the RPMs sit way high at freeway speeds compared to the auto. The 6th gear should be way lower IMO, that would help greatly.
