The audio on my SR5 isn't horrible (to me)...but it's not great. Without having to replace the head unit...what can I do speaker wise that gives any real clarity or volume enhancements?

Go to Crutchfield site, great info and pricing. They'll help you.

I went with the Subaru tweeters, Kickers in the front and rear and wired the front speakers to the rear. The rear speakers have almost no power to them and that is the way it was designed. Really need and amp. Good enough for me for now. I don't want to change the head unit yet because I don't want to loose any of the functions.

I didnt replace my door speakers, I just replaced the tweeters and added an 8" under seat powered Sub. Sounds great! It's all in the tweeters.....

I replaced all 6 speakers with higher grade "Kickers" and I think it sounds much better. If you are a real audio buff you might require more depending on what you are listening to.

I prefer the hum of the open road and my thoughts, and I'm not that interested in music anymore.
The good-old-stuff bores me and the new stuff insults me.

But, when I want it, I want it.... I should think about upgrading the speakers.

Start with those Subaru tweeters and go from there. Those are the only things I replaced and to me it sounds great so I won’t be changing any other speakers.

Like it or not the crutch to the entire system is the factory radio which puts out 12ish watts to the front door speakers and dash tweeters and maybe 4ish watts to the rear doors. Replacing the factory radio will yield far better results and sound quality (even with factory speakers) than trying to run aftermarket speakers off of the factory head unit.

That said, the Subaru kicker tweeters and kicker 6x9 3 way coaxial's are one of the most popular upgrades for sound improvement. An 8" kicker hideaway powered sub under the seat for some oomf too.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/premium-audio-upgrade-for-less-than-250.510424/

I'm running the factory head unit, Focal RSE-165 front, Focal RCX-165 rear doors, JL Stealthbox, Kicker key 200.4, and Kicker key 500.1. For the price the sound quality is pretty darn good. I still have the itch to replace the factory radio and upgrade to proper 5 channel amp, but for the cost vs. benefit I feel money could be better spent elsewhere.

IMHO - use a sound source of the best quality you can. For example, rip a CD and place the content on a USB stick, or on the phone, with the phone connected via USB cable. The dynamic range improvement and sound-field (separation) should be pretty dramatic and your listening experience better. Why SXM receivers are put in cars and trucks today, I'll never understand.

At the very least - try streaming from Pandora, iHeart Radio or Spotify over AM, SXM, or FM sources.

THEN consider replacing your speakers and/or Head Unit.

Imo, this truck needs better antenna before it does speakers.

I put in the Kicker tweeters and Sound Ordnance door speakers. Everything sounds a lot better, it doesn’t blow u away but it’s a lot clearer. I wasn’t looking to spend a fortune or get into adding an amp I just wanted everything to be clearer and I accomplished that so I’m happy. For the replacement door speakers from Crutchfield it was something like $120 shipped to my door.

Are any of the door speakers plug and play like the Subaru and DS18 tweeters are?

I'm looking to replace my speakers as well. Kicker brand seems to be the most popular. I have already replaced my tweeters and it made a huge difference. If I replace my door speakers is a power pack recommended, or is it a waste of $?

I think so. I used a harness so I did not have to cut any of the factory wires. All connections were made in the dash behind the radio. If I ever decide to do something different, I can go back to stock and start over.

You won't get more power or sound level out of new speakers
Your stock HU will still be putting out 7 watts per channel or whatever ridiculous number it is. Lol
You will need also, at minimum, a new HU and amp or a LOC and amp. But you have to get power to.speakers to play better, louder sound.
Also, the stock HU "rolls off" at volume, to protect the trash o.e. speakers from damage.
Another good reason to go aftermarket
