You all know that worthless inch deep slot to the right of the AT shifter?

Did you know there is like another 4-5 inches of available space under there? Looking down beside the shifter here, there is no reason this storage area can't be deeper.

So, I cut the bottom out, but left a small rim all around.

When I put the trim piece back in, there was this little piece interfering in the rear driver's side corner (upper right in this crappy pic).

So, I notched it out with my dremel (the remaining plastic is plenty stout). It's the upper left corner in this pic.

Then, I cut and sanded a piece of 1/4" MDF until it just fit the bottom of the original cubby. I then glued up a 6"L x 1.5"W x 4"D box and glued the other panel on top, so the whole thing just drops in place through the bottom of the original cubby. With the divider in, I can keep my phone or wallet or knife in the bigger compartment, and can keep pens or what have you in the smaller one.

I used a satin black paint. I think I'll sand it one more time and paint it with a matte paint. I think it will match the factory trim much better that way.

It's a little mod, but it's been on my list for a while and I finally got around to it today, and I love it already. Keeps my cup holders free of a bunch of stuff. I think there's at least another 1-1.5 inches that can be used under there if I notch the driver's side of the bottom of it to go over the bolts that hold the shifter housing in place.

Very nice, I like that

Next time, since you have it apart. Use a wet paper towel and clean the coffee dribbles:puke:

You could also get some carbon fiber vinyl and wrap it. That would probably look pretty good as well. Awesome Idea BTW as I hate mine because it really is useless as everything slides out of it.
