Better tools or tricks for U-joints?

I've tried rental ball joint removal kits and large c-clamps, even pie cutting some pipe to get a flush fit but I keep having trouble getting a good hold on the yokes on my 2000 3.4l, because they taper in slightly and the ends don't have much extra material. These are some seriously old u-joints so i need a solution with some decent torque, the last one I ended up having to drill and slide hammer out the cups after soaking in kroil for 2 days.

Anyone have useful tricks for these yokes? If they were 90 degrees i think a ball joint press would work just fine. Thanks.

 

Shop press, buy one at harbor freight

I have a 50 Ton press but even so I find it impossible to change them by myself with the way the Yokes are made.

Every time I swear I am going to build a fixture to hold them and forget all about it.

One Person Holds the driveshaft the other lines things up and works the press by far the easiest way I found

 

Something like this but a little shorter then this one will work wonders holding up the back of the shaft

I have something like that It never helped .

Drive Shaft kept falling off .

After kinking one it needed replaced I quit I now have a Shop do them cheaper then I can

 

I forget who make it....but there is a attachment for a air hammer.it's hollow and you support the cap with a socket(smaller than cap)and bang away at the top...the top cap winds up in the hollow void.
I'll take a pic Monday and share....kia u joint for the older sorento is made the same...I have way to much experience with those...lol..

 

So true, the way the yokes are designed really pissed me off. Sucks even harder if you have to change one on the trail with sockets.
