Hey Guys. Beware of your front motor . i had my 2016 Tacoma serviced at dealership and my dealership never informed me that my front of my motor was leaking oil. So i noticed front of my motor you can see oil in front of my motor. After taking the truck back they couldn't find any leaks. So they put dye in my engine to find leaks, Sure enough My FRONT COVER PLATE WAS LEAKING OIL. THANK GOD FOR MY EXTENDED WARRANTY I TOOK OUT WHEN I PURCHASED MY 2016 TACOMA. If this happens to you at all. i hope you took out extended warranty. GOING to cost the warranty company $$ 3,000. When this is gonna be done. Please Beware!!!!!

Timing cover is a known issue in the 3rd gen especially with the early 16 models.
Glad you got the warranty and they are taking care of it for you.

Timing cover leaks have been around here and there since the 1GR-FE in 2005. I had some wetting in my previous 2nd gen, but it wasn't serious enough (no noticeable drop in oil level) to do anything. Different story if your state has safety inspections that flag leaks.

Are you past the 5 yr / 60k powertrain warranty already, to invoke the extended warranty?

Same here on my Aug'16 build on my 2017. Have been getting the dealer to do regular service since new, but as I was ready to get some fluids changed and new spark plugs I decided to swap to an independent shop that specializes in Toyota/Lexus where most of the techs drive Tacos (and a much better rate than the dealership...)

I thought I smelled a bit of oil since new, honestly but never saw anything on my garage floor or anything and since the dealer has seen it every 5k miles or so, would hope they would catch something like this. The techs took pictures and sure enough under the PS pump area you can see where seeping oil has built up. Its not enough to register on the dip stick or anything but it's definitely "seeping" if not yet a full on "leak"

For the last 4 years I've thought about the money I "wasted" on the extended warranty, but looks like I'll be getting all of that money back and then some with this repair. That said, I'm not in a huge hurry. My extended warranty is good until 100k and includes the timing cover and any correlated leaks specifically so for now I'm just going to roll with it a bit and monitor. I'll get it fixed eventually because I'm covered, but TBH if I didn't have the warranty on it I'd probably just let it roll...

The timing cover leaks have occurred on the V6s, correct? Asking for a friend that has a 3rd gen 2.7L, 2TR-FE.

Yes, you have a starter motor, windshield wiper motors, fan motor, etc. Hope this helps.

Friend of mine always corrects me when I say "motor" he says a motor runs on electricity and that my truck, tractors, mowers, etc. all have engines :anonymous:

    hold on there brotha.

you got your money back, but remember, there are also millions of other toyota customers out there that bought extended warranties and did not get their money back. In fact, the vast majority don’t. It’s pure profit on Toyota’s end, and a lottery game on your end.

Indeed. Insurance companies are far from "non-profits" but in my case I guess I'm glad to have it at this point
