    Hi all-

I currently have Michelin Defenders (2 years old) on my 1999 Prerunner SR5 2wd. I now live in the mountains and am finding they absolutely suck even with a weighed down bed in anything other than light snow. I am considering putting BFG KOs on my truck and wondering if anyone with a first gen has switched to these tires and has any feedback on highway performance, snowy/icy terrain, and/or MPGs. Currently can't afford to keep a separate set of snow tires, but open to other all-terrain suggestions as well!

    Thanks!

I did that switch from Michelin to KO2. The only negative I think is a worse traction on wet pavement. KO2 has more aggressive thread which is better on snow and mud without increased road noise.

Besides these differences both are great tires to wear.

I got some new K02's last year and they were fantastic in deep mountain snow. You'll be really happy with them.

I have the original KOs on mine and so far they’re good. Just slippery when wet so you have to be careful.

KO2’s are best in snow. They aren’t very good all around tires, that being said I do run them. They don’t get good traction in rain.

Literally all my Tacoma has had since I've owned it (bought it 2005) is KOs.

    265/75r16's E rated.

It's a really great all around tire. I've driven other trucks with other tires, and I think it's one of the better tires for a daily driver that also goes off road. Never had a flat. Not once.

As far as the slippery when wet thing, the only time I noticed anything like that is when they were completely bald. I really had to baby it in slow accelerating corners (like turning left from a stop light). It was easy to fishtail. Got new ones and that wasn't an issue any more.

Will replace them with KM2s once these wear out, but because it isn't a daily driver any more...

Original KO's were great, KO2's don't really impress me compared to the competition. For a mainly Street driven truck I'd look into the Cooper AT3, Toyo AT2, and Fallen AT3/W

I had KM2’s and KO’s before my now KO2’s. In my real world experience of the 3. I like the KO2’s best for all around. The KO2’s are much better off road and on road than the KO’s they replaced. I have about 35k on my KO2’s now and should get 60k from them. That being said my next tire will probably be a dick cepek extreme country.

Love my KO2’s! I travel a lot to work. 600 miles one way once a month. I’ve had them for a year and a half and there is still a good amount of tread and I off-road. When it’s time to buy some tires I’m not even bothering with trying another tire. I couldn’t ask for anything better.

Didn't have any noticeable issues while driving in the rain we just had. Tires were fine.

When was the last time you actually took stinkbug to the snow? :anonymous:

As an alternate to the KO2s, might also consider these:

My truck spends more time on dirt and snow than it does on pavement, and that's what I run. They are great on packed snow, and dirt. Not so good in mud. We don't have sand, so I don't know how they would do on that. They hold up pretty good too.

One interesting thing I have found is on snow I get better traction with them aired up to 45+ psi. I don't know for sure why, but at higher pressures I get better traction on snow. I think it's because at higher pressure there is less tire touching the ground, and therefore more pounds per square inch. What ever the reason, for me they do better at higher pressure. have done test, different pressures, same snow covered bit of road, same speed and so on. Also, at lower pressure the truck follows tracks in the snow and wanders, at higher pressure it goes straight and cuts through them.

Had the original KOs on mine now had the KO2s for about a year and a half. Glad I stuck with them. Less road noise than previous at highway speeds pretty decent traction. I am not much of a 4wheeler but more of a urban commuter. No problems in Colorado snow but its a 4wd.

Hehe, in all fairness you never see snow and only seldom see rain... I got family in McAllen, which I've visited, so I know.

OP, I see snow all the time, well, when I go skiing. The KO2's have served me well. They are VERY quiet when new, but after 15K miles they get NOISY. Other than that, I'd probably buy them again.

@AR1999 You may want to consider other brands as well.

I'll throw my 2¢ in for the Cooper S/T Maxx.

They have good road manners and I haven't had any issues in the 3 years they have been on my truck. Good in snow, on slick roads (ice/slush), and even in rain.

And thankfully I got them on a sale day so spent less than $650 for all 4.

I had Michelins on my 01 double cab and went to KOs. You'll love the difference in snow, mud, dirt - the BFGs are great tires. And they're impressively quiet on the freeway for an AT.
