It's due to them being an e-load tire... it's ready for heavy payloads and towing expectations of a 1-ton truck, that a tacoma platform can't touch...

p-series tires are just fine for a tacoma

    UPDATE -
Just left Discount Tire again. This time it was the store in Douglasville. They had to rebalance all four wheel/tires. They were 3-5oz out each. They told me that most likely the balancer in Hiram needs calibrated or someone wasn't on their A game. LOL Rides much much better, not as perfectly smooth as the GrandTrek's but 100% better than how it was before the rebalance.

Well at least it resolved most of the issues regarding the poor ride. The 5mpg drop I would say only occurs when you are out on the trails and offroading. You just don't get good mileage doing that. On the street 2mpg loss is usually the max.

Hopefully you are satisfied with the ride and that mpg decrease is OK. I love the way these tires look and would sacrifice that for them alone. But you factor in the performance when you need it and these tires will be worth it. You want them when you need them. At20 are sketchy even for a dirt alleyway as far as traction is concerned. Side wall strength is probably 200% plus

mkinzer126, thanks for your support. Sorry you had an issue with the balance but glad the store in Douglasville was able to straighten out the balance.

How are these compared to Duratrac in term of sidewall strength and in the rain?

    I ended buy a set of 265/75/r16 KO2's for my 2004 TRD 4x4.

I've been doing some research on how much air these tires require and I'm a bit conflicted.

First off I currently have the front at 47 psi and the rear at 42 psi, however with the chalk test only about 80-90% of the thread contacts the ground. I've seen data charts which show that at low PSI's like 20-30, e-rated LT tires actually perform significantly worse than standard P tires of the same size. In other words these E rated tires are dangerous at that pressure.

The only way I can get 100% even tire wear would be to bring the PSI down, so I'm conflicted to what my options are. Is it more of a priority to have the contact patch 100% flat, or to have the pressure high enough so that there is no risk of tire failure due to what would be considered under inflation in a E rate tire. Any professionals out there who could chime in?

edit: just wanted to add, I have also called up BF Goodrich, and they told me that the I need to run the tires at 70 psi. They established this after asking me what car I was mounting it on. The person on the phone started looking up the weight of the truck and all that.

Well yea they are probably meant to be aired down below that in off-road situations. However I was thinking of more of a highway driving situation, where having a E tire below 30 might be akin to having a normal P rated tire below 20. Do you think thats correct?
