My ass was more sore than my legs from that ride. My saddle is the WTB Pure. What do you guys use for longer rides?

You could say I have a bit of a bike problem.. I usually build up 2-4 new bikes per year, I have a two car garage full of bikes.. I spend most of my free time riding or working on bikes

I used to be a hard core cyclist, did 1000s of miles per year, a couple organized centuries a year, and did long distance solo rides up to 100 mile nearly weekly. slowed down in my old age. a few years ago my 'urban' bike got mushed in a car crash, so I built this up to replace it, its a rather sweet ride for a lazy city-bike, I really should ride it more often.

I gave my last bouncy-mountain bike to my university kid, its a 2001 specialized stumpjumper FSR disc. I still have my mid-1970s Campi=and-Reynolds-531 motobecane grand record but its beat to heck. my kid also has my ancient fat tire cruiser 7-speed festival bike as the bike above is really all I need anymore.

Do you wear a chamois/padded shorts? I've gotten used to my seat. Not saying I'm not a little sore when I get off the bike but the short def help.

BTW John, thats a really sweet bike you have there. I would like to get a more upright seating style bike for cruising with my son and rail trails.

it started life as a Specialized Globe Vienna 'hybrid', but I've changed the bars, stem, crank, tires, and farkled it with rack and fenders (since removed as I've realized I'm not gonna be riding in the rain anyways).

this is the bar setup when I was fine tuning. I ended up taking about another inch off each bar so the hand spacing was most comfortable for my shoulder width and riding style.

its not a totally upright bike, I've had those and dislike them, too much weight on your butt sucks when pedaling more than 5-10 miles. the weight is about 70% on my legs, 30% on my hands, with me bent somewhat forward, bar height equal to seat height.

I always used to use a gel padded seat as well as padded shorts. Gel on gel.

my favorite LD riding seats were hard, not squishy. "gel" is just squishy foam. the goal is to support the ishium bone loops in your butt, without interfering with your leg travel by rubbing your thighs. the other key is to get most of your weight OFF your butt and onto your legs by having the right amount of forward lean, so the seat is just guiding your butt position. you don't want much weight on your hands either, this requires some core strength in your torso.

I have butt shorts. Fox chamois or whatever their real name is. I just call them butt shorts.

My seat is a more firm seat, but it does have some plush to it. It is better than a lot of other seats I have tried, but my butt just grows sore after a bit. I should try standing more often like you say.

So, off topic but hey... what brake pads have worked for you in the past? Low dust, great stopping power and no noise.

    Thanks

for cantilever and 'v-brakes', I like the stock Shimano pads. for conventional road bike brakes, I like KoolStop salmon pads. My one disc brake mountain bicycle, I never did wear out the pads on before I gave it to my kid.

if you're talking about Toyota Tacoma brakes, wrong thread :D I've not had to do a brake job yet, the stock pads on my '08 work great and don't leave a lot of dust. On my euro cars I've had great results from EBC and Brembo pads, on Brembo disk rotors

Wife and I bought bikes in January. By really exerting myself it has lead to a problem with my heart and tomorrow I will be getting a pacemaker. If I had not started biking this problem may have continued laying dormant for several more years until perhaps it was too late to do anything about it. Moral of the story....exercise is good in more ways than one...

I have 60 days to stay off the bike. I may not last that long though. I would be back on it in a few weeks were it up to me. The wife though acts like I'm gonna die if I don't pay strict adherence to the Doctor. My fear is getting my butt bones back in shape, It took a while to get used to that saddle.
