Same train of thought here. I've gone through a lot of vehicles with anywhere between 1-3 years of ownership. This Tacoma will be kept for a while. The simplicity, reliability, utility, and potential desirability (6MT) make a lot of sense to me.

I assume at some point in my life I’ll have to buy another vehicle, but I plan to put at least 300K miles on this one. Hopefully a lot more than that.

    I read the article.
This guy is a good writer.
I'll stop at that because he, just like many here, like to blame Toyota for their mistakes. Sure, he called himself an idiot but he also blamed plug location and not being able to check fluid.

People like this guy will never be the guy who determines what a real BIFL is, they will just depend on others and follow the leader.

I have some 40 year old tools. How long before it is a BIFL?

You know, I think I will keep this one for awhile because
    A. I like it
    B. I moved out of the salt belt

To me, a truck is just another tool. If it holds up, it will stay. If not, it will go.
Anyway, I drive 10K/yr now when between 2014 and 2020 I drove 40-45K/yr. Same company, different job.
I calculated at 45K/yr, I was driving 8 hour days 80 days year. I kinda miss it but it is nice just driving in town mostly.

With some vigilant maintenance you may be in luck.

I maintain my shit as best I can, but like relationships, I don't count on any one possession to be the forever thing. I appreciate and enjoy it today, because I have it today. What happens tomorrow, happens tomorrow.

If it's got a screen chances are it isn't a BIFL item. Yeah you can replace the screen and the computer that controls it, and a Toyota screen from who ever supplies them might out live the other manufacturers.

I can't recall ever seeing a vehicle that lasted a lifetime.

My Grand Father had an old International truck that was bought used, maybe before I was born. My Uncle his SIL acquired it at some point in time, refurbished it and might still have it. The last time I saw that truck was twenty plus years ago.

That's the closest thing I've ever seen to a BIFL vehicle.

Funny you mention this; it’s exactly why I got rid of my 2013 Ram and bought a Tacoma. I bought the Ram new and took extremely good care of it, but by 60K miles all the fancy electronics they stuffed in that thing were already starting to fail. So I went for the least complicated modern truck I could find.

When you get my age you realize Life is like a roll of toilet paper:
The closer you get to the end the faster it goes....

I never wanted my 2021 AC. The wife was itching for it to haul lumber in etc. So I took it for a test drive and loved it.
It's my second Toyota Truck, the first one back in 1992 and now this one.

So I love it - and seeing as I'm getting towards the end of the roll, my son shall take over a nice vehicle, paid for, clean, maintained, and
hopefully he will enjoy it as much as I do. I can tell he's itching for my early demise.... and who could blame the kid LOL ... he's got a fresh
Master's Degree in Computer Science from a major university, ZERO DEBT, and more money in the bank than I have.... sure he drives a 2003
Corolla that is beat to hell - but he's keeping his eye on the prize LOL...

    So yea, BIFL.
