So an acquaintance of mine at another dealership has encountered an interesting situation with a 2016 Tacoma with the new v6. Customer stated oil light was on at around 5,000mi. Upon inspection, found truck was low on oil. Added 2.5qts. No oil leaks were found. Began an oil consumption test, and concluded the truck loses approximately 5qts of oil every 10,000mi, because at 10,000mi, another 2.5qts was added. When looking in cylinder 4 with a bore scope, we found scoring on cylinder wall #4 and lots of oil. Spark plug #4 was smothered in oil too. Toyota approved an engine tear down. Cylinder #4 indeed scored, heavy carbon deposits on piston #4 along with valve parts from the same cylinder. Oil found in intake. Currently trying to find source of oil. Will share pics soon.

queue all the haters of the 3rd gen in 3...2....1....

But I am curious as to what's going on and if it's a single issue or has others reports this as well? That person must have been driving quite a bit to hit 10k miles already.

Lots of oil in the intake side of both heads. Tons of carbon in cyl 4. All 3 cyl walls on bank 2 are scored. Rings and seals looked ok

yeah I'm hoping this is isolated as well and doesn't spread to everyone. That could be bad.

yeah I'm hoping it was a Friday @ 4:30 engine or something like that. Perhaps check your oil levels just to be safe... If it's low, DO NOT add oil. Take it to your dealership and get the documentation started.

Do you have a VIN number on it to know which plant or when this one was built?

One can never have too many light bars.
All the engines are built at the same factory in Alabama.

Looks like self cleaning cycle working as designed.

It wasn't designed to handle oil like this. We suspect the excessive oil lead to the carbonizing of everything. Despite how the valves looked, it still had perfect compression. It's quite the head scratcher.

I dont think its head scracher. Somebody at factory scored cylinder, so oil in larger quantity than normal was getting pass piston inside cylinder #4, since this engine has that Atkinson cycle. That means when oil was going pass piston, inside the cylinder, and Atkinson cycle kicked in, intakes valve stayed open and fuel and oil got pushed into intake.
Really the only head scratch-er is who is the a hole who scored cylinder. I dont think there are many engines like that, unless the retard in factory who was putting that engine together was drunk through out the shift.
    :)
So that maybe only truck, but Iwould check every truck that has engine from that particular dude.

Just throwing this out there. If the valve stem seal failed catastrophically enough to allow a certain amount of oil into the cylinder, and the engine continued running for several thousand miles, could the resulting carbon build up break away enough material to score the cylinder?

Likely "just" a manufacturing defect. I've been checking mine routinely and don't notice any change in oil level. I'm at about 3500 miles. The design and testing of engines from a company like Toyota is so refined that having a gross design error just isn't going to happen.

I would definitely try to get a new crate motor. Seems like this is applicable under the lemon law.
