Update.. at 44k miles now. Engine kept eating about 2-3 quarts every 5k miles.

Finally threw a (real) code and kept running into limp mode - at high ish (think onramp, not racing) load I get a P301 cylinder 1 misfire. Tech pulled it and spark plug in cyl 1 is fouled, took it in on Sat. Waiting on parts/Toyota to determine action.

Nice to happen over christmas when I'm a thousand miles away from home, no? :p At least the loaner Camry is nice.

my best bet is a valve seal that has been booted off. The only way to solve this would be a whole new engine and exhaust system...

    time for an LS swap.

Think that's covered under the powertrain warantee? ;) And if I wanted a swap (and it was compatible), I'd rather have a diesel of some sort... :D

I quit being an MK over 10 years ago, but that is clearly not good now and it wouldn’t have been then, either.

A truck with only 44K on the clock shouldn't have spark plugs like this. IMO, Toyota likely should be installing a new engine.

My truck uses practically no oil between 10K changes.

probably one of the dealer specials that got very little oil to begin with. Im not too worried about this being common seeing as I have 40,000 miles with virtually no oil consumption!

As suspected, scratched #1 cylinder spotted via their borescope. Longblock and other parts on order, eta next week. I'll try to coax out some pictures from their tech.

Factory? Like I said earlier, in 'normal' driving, was consuming 1qt in 4k miles. Over the course of this last consumption test, I deliberately rev'd high and drove a lot more aggressive than my normal style and it went 1.25 in 1k miles. It's just annoying that it took 45k miles and a fouled plug before they finally figured it out.

    Borescope

    Cylinder Head

And the cost they get to bill Toyota.

I guess, like the OP, it was just scratched at the factory. Oh well, hand assembled rebuild engine at 45k mi.

Since it's basically a new block, new cylinder, and replacement bits. Oh, and exhaust system test to make sure all that oil isn't contaminating it.

It would be neat to know where in the cylinder wall that scoring occurred at.

This has been a great read. I would still be a little hesitant to buy the 2GR equipped Tacoma but after going through the forums it doest appear to be a SUPER problematic engine. Ill still say I was very happy with my 1GRFE in my 2G and continue to be with the 1GR in my 5G T4R. Thanks OP for sharing!

The 2.7 is a great little engine, but it had little issues as well. Ive been happy with my 2GR-FKS. 53k on it, and runs great. Just sometimes things happen. Definitely a bummer.
