Lemon laws won't cover this because it's in the shop to get fixed. Now if you took it in because it's burning oil, multiple times and they couldn't find or didn't fix the issue then lemon law would apply. It will not cover you taking it in for an issue that is duplicated or found but waiting for repair. The manufacture would be liable however for a rental during the duration. I'm not sure if there is a certain time table that is required to have your vehicle repaired. But it's not uncommon for people to be in a rental for a month or longer on some issues. The Takata airbag recall we had Honda customers in rentals for a month and a half while they were waiting for there parts. Once the vehicle was taken in, we couldn't legally allow them to take the car back. They had to be put in a rental and there car parked until the parts arrived and were installed

This motor doesn't belong in a truck. How long will this farce go on before a tuned dual vvti 1GR is back in the Tacoma? What a joke.

A lot of the issues with the 3 liters was maintenance. Toyota decided to stretch maintenance intervals and then they sludged. I've seen plenty of high mile 1MZ/3MZ engines though.

Lemon laws vary from state to state. In my home state (WA) a vehicle out of service for repair for 30 days in the first 12/12,000 qualifies for lemon law arbitration.

The 3VZ had a big head gasket campaign. Failed gaskets causing etched blocks. Complete short block/long block replacements.

Yes, the engine failed because it was put into a truck chassis. I am surprised they even bothered to take it apart.

    /\ This...
2GR are known to have problems (Google: 2gr oil leak)
Some Toyota motors are just utter crap. 3.slo was before, 2gr line is now... If you have any doubts just look around a forum for all the new engine problems. And this is not really new engine, more like refreshed engine.

If you strain motor it will fall apart pretty quick..

Definitely crate motor. He bought a new truck, deserves a new motor, not one rebuilt at 10K miles.

I use Mobil 1 and change every 5K. At 140k, she's still running great with no oil consumption.

Well this seems to be a fluke, no? We haven't heard any horror stories like this here by any G3 owners.

Toyota doesn't source their oil control rings from the same manufacturer as Subaru, do they?

It's actually the piston itself in the EJ257, the ring lands are close to the top of the piston and the material is "brittle" so to speak. Ringlands fail because the stock hypereutectic piston material is brittle and susceptible to heavy damage during detonation. Detonation itself is the primary cause of fail.

I had two new 4Runners with the 3.0. The second one('95) I had around 60K miles after 4 years. All I did was change the oil and filter and air filter. Pretty sure I swapped out plugs too, because it seems like there was "that one plug" in the rear that took as long as all others combined.

Anyway, I never had any problems and at the time believed the 3.0 was a great motor. And now all these years later it sounds like a lot folks on here don't believe it was a great motor. Was the 3.0 really not that good?
