I've been wheeling in Big Bend Ranch SP a couple of times. There are a LOT of 4x4 only roads and they can be GNARLY. On one trip I got two flats in 3 days. Had to drive back to Presidio to get them fixed. I didn't want to risk driving around that place on my spare. If you get stuck out there with no buddies, you are on your own. It's pretty desolate. The area is really awesome with miles of beautiful terrain and views. Lots of places to camp and take pictures. This place is a hidden gem in Texas. Not many people go there. They usually just go to Big Bend NP since it's right next to the State park.

    Definitely worth the drive.

Too poor to list anything interesting.

    Bumping this; looking for info.

Headed to the BB State Park this weekend. We've done the NP, but not the state. Any suggestions?

Cool thread. So black gap road looked to be the most challenging from the vids. Could a stock 4x4 do it without armor?

    If you're careful, yes.

There are a couple of spots requiring you to choose good lines, but it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be.

Yeah, this post did die, but I would still like to make a trip out there sometime. It was been over 4 years since I was there last. Would definitely like to check out the SP as well.

Alright, I may have time this fall, I have no idea what 2017 will look like though. Hopefully, I will have a lift by then...

Has anyone gone in October? My boyfriend and I are going to the State Park (and probably the National as well, since we both have a whole week off), and we'd like some advice from anyone who's been around that time of year.

October - or really anytime in the fall - is definitely the best time of year to go. Still gets warm during the day but not hot as all hell like it is now. I haven't done much hardcore off-roading in the park since I just got my Tacoma not too long ago and it's all stock, but I've still had plenty of fun cruising around the park in the easier-to-access areas. The hike around Solitario is the highlight of the park - but be aware that pretty much all hiking trails in the park are about as minimal as you get - it can be easy to lose track of where you're going if you're not paying attention.

Also, this is a pretty comprehensive guide to roads in the park.

Just to second what TravisWestTX said, I think fall is a good time. Still warm during the day and not cold at night. I went in September a couple years back when I first got my Tacoma. I went to the National Park, not the State Park side, but I've heard the State side is great too!

When I went, they had just had a lot of rain, so the park rangers were suggesting to not go on some of the more difficult trails (Black Gap Road, River Road, etc.). I didn't have a lot of time as I was heading to CO next for some off-roading there, but I did manage to get in the Old Ore Road.

If you do go to the National Park side, check out Emery Peak, The Window, and Pine Canyon Trail. I didn't get to hike as much of the Pine Canyon Trail, but apparently there was a waterfall at the end of it.

Also, I assume you'll be camping while you're there. I don't have any advice on that (even though I did camp while I was there), just do it if you're weren't planning to. It was great!

I'll fit that one in to the itinerary. We'll be there for an entire week, so we've got time to spare. Thanks!
