Maybe this is a dumb question but what happens if you buy a big brake kit and then the company goes out of business? I assume they all use a standard pad made to fit another vehicle, but does anyone know what vehicle that is? Do any of the BBK companies tell you?

I doubt any of the big names STOPTECH, WILWOOD, POWERBRAKE and etc will go out of business anytime soon. :)

While I agree, it’s just a question I’ve always had in the back of my mind.

Typically, the companies use a backing plate from another vehicle, then the pad is their own compounding. If you can find out which vehicle the backing plate is from, you got your pads. I've done this with a couple of Wilwood big brake kits.

So none of the companies actually come out and say “our pads are based off of X vehicles pads”, interesting, thanks for the answers

Some will, some won't. But once you find out, it can carry over to a lot of big brake kits within a product line. For the most part, the calipers aren't vehicle specific. Just the mounting ears and rotors.

I hope they use a common pad fitment many companies make.

if not, some will likely not go out of business. They may be supplier for performance and race cars.

There’s also 4runner BBK using OE dimension pads.

Recognizable names like StopTech (Centric), Wilwood, Alcon, etc. are not likely to go out of business. If anything the product lines get bought and sold by different companies. Are you looking to upsize the brakes on your 18 year-old Pennylvania truck? How many more years are you looking to drive it?

Easy and cheap upgrade is to go with 2010-2015 4Runner calipers and rotors. They use the same pads as you do now on a larger working diameter.
