Makalawena on a stock truck could be done considering some of the trucks I've seen down there. Just go slow and pick the right line and you'll be okay.

Did you do the whole R1 road? How was it up there? Been wanting to do it for a while i've just never talked to anyone who has done the whole thing.

Yeah we did the whole R1, started at the visitor center and ended at Kikohana. It’s a beautiful up there. We got 3 hours in and it started raining, not ideal. Highly recommend not going up there on your own but go with a buddy, it’s 27 miles at 10k elevation, with no short cut route out.

There’s some cool trails on the Kilohana side. Did Skyline trail the other week, ended up at 11,600ft.

Thanks for the information man looks like I have to put some more research into it before I try it out. Too bad there are not any offroad/overland truck meetups/drives here on the BI. R1 seems like a cool place for such a thing to happen at. With the amount of Toyotas here there should be something like that.

I'm always up for exploring, have done most of the usual drives but am constantly looking on Gaiagps/google earth for the next one. Just did 'Road to the Sea' first 6 miles easy with one small technical bit, the last mile though needed lots of spotter input. On the way out I remembered most of my lines and simply drove out but did connect with the skids a couple of times.

I'm gonna be leaving in September but would be down to go explore... I'm down by Keauhou, where y'all at?

I'm on your side of the island too! Feel free to DM (goes for anyone else too) and maybe we can get a discord/signal/telegram group chat going. Been wanting to hit up makalawena n green sands but open to suggestions

Yeah R1 would be great if you could camp up there, make it a 2 day trip. I plan on going back up from the Mauna Kea side, about 2 hours in there’s some impressive cinder cones I’d like to hike and explore more.

Good looking truck, how do u like those Cooper’s? are they the at3’s

These are at2's actually. Its my first 4x4 so i cant make a good comparison. But almost 20k miles on them and they look to be holding up and wearing evenly.
Im not familiar with the area. Next time i go back im probably going to explore the waimea side if theres anything.
    Is camping up there legal?

Cool, congrats on the truck and actually using it!

I had some At3’s on a suv and they were great all round tyres (great in the snow too) when I get round to buying new tyres for my truck I’ll probably get Cooper again.

Yeah the Kilohana side is pretty cool, check out skyline rd. When you get on satellite view you can see like a triangle trail at the end of it, takes u up to 11,600ft, pretty insane up there.

Did it when my truck was stock. Ezpz. Just take it slow and watch your line. The gate and the one part right before the beach was the only semi difficult parts.

Yea we need to get it going for sure. Jeeps are cool and all but Toyota is where it's at. I'm located Waimea side and am also leaving in mid-august and would be down for any type of group meetup/offroading.

Not being from HI, just visiting I have to say almost every single Yota is 5' off the ground and it's absolute nonsense and I'm here for it.

Anyone been down the makalawena 4x4 trail recently? Is it really closed with some concrete posts now?
