Wow. Nice setup and sorry to hear you went so far on the stock system only to find out it is not enough in the long run. Good news is that for your brakes you came to the right place when you do consider doing a BBK. Also as I alluded to before, you can save a bunch of money on the rear disc conversion by going to pick and pull for the 4runner caliper and brake line, and also you can save on the master cylinder by doing the same with a Sequoia. Overall brings the costs from about 1000 for the disc conversion and 400 for the master cylinder to:
    300 for backing plate
100ish for caliper, lines, and brackets off a 4runner
20 bucks for a caliper rebuild kit and new ceramic grease from autozone
200 for a set of new rear rotors

    MC:
100 for backing plate kit with hardline extensions
    50 bucks for new MC
50 bucks for new clutch reservoir- reuse old rubber line with a new hose clamp

There is an install video as well on YouTube from 'UPI' , it involves using a hydraulic press to remove the axle bearing and the original backing plate! I don't have one of those so I ended up going with SOS performance kit. Cutting the oe backing plate off is a pain but I don't have a press and I'm good with sawzalls and an air cutting wheel :sawzall:

Finally had a chance to install my Wilwood big brake kit after being out of town for most of the last 3 months. It was a small hassle to have to cut off the dust shield but the Dremel saw did the job and I was just glad to not start any fires in my garage. After finishing the installation I called a friend who also has a Tacoma with a lot more experience with brakes to help me bleed the brakes. I could not seem to get all of the air out of the lines so I called Wilwood tech support and found out that the small nipples need to be opened up and not the brass nuts like on the Tacoma brakes. Oh well. They are much lighter than the stock brakes which cuts down on the unsprung weight. Overall, I am glad to have done this mod since it only has to save my life one time or avoid one accident to have more than paid for itself. The link below is around $200 less than the Wilwood retail price on their website. It also has free shipping and no tax. I also posted this in the what have you done to your 3rd gen today thread but wanted to have this in Steve's thread also. I also changed one of the pictures in this thread to mix it up some.

    https://www.summitracing.com/search...SortOrder=Ascending&keyword=wilwood 140-14577

The Wilwood brakes new in the box weighed 47 pounds while the stock brake parts weighed 73 pounds in the same box for a savings of at least 26 pounds.

Looks great Tom! I couldn't agree more with your post, I rest easier knowing that my brakes are ready for basically anything I throw at them as well :amen:

When was the last time you did new brake rotors? Brake-in procedure can make a huge difference in stopping power

One day, I'll upgrade the rears from the 4Runner calipers to the Stop Techs. Then it's really on, come next track day. :burnrubber:

For sure! I noticed SOS performance started stocking a 4runner to Stoptech rear disc upgrade kit for ~2k~. It includes a pair of aerorotors as well as a pair of forged aluminum ST40s. Id love to have that setup, but I fear at this point I am going to experience severely diminishing returns for my money (honestly because my brakes now are so much better than before i just dont think theres that much room for improvement..), and theres also a twin turbo setup that has been confirmed on the way for the 2GRFKS... @OVTune posted in one of the tune dev. threads that he sent his test truck to a shop called 'turbosource' for some testing earlier this week so I know its real now and gotta start my twin turbo fund lol

That is a damn nice looking setup... I'd love to figure out a way to get stock size (or slightly larger) 2 piece rotors made.

I think I posted this on TW somewhere on here but that would be the "cheater" BBK, just increase rotor size slightly and use the same calipers. No line pressure issues but an increase in overall torque, and a drastic drop in unsprung weight. It would probably involve a custom rotor hat though, so you wouldn't save much money.

Might be worth seeing if Stoptech/Brembo/Wilwood makes a stock Tacoma diameter 2-piece rotor and then seeing if they could just drill it for 6x139.7? I dont see that needing to be crazy expensive but I guess I could be wrong about that? I feel like they must have blank rotor hats somewhere they could drill for you though

@stevotivo12 any better shots of the total chaos spindle gusset trimming? I have them in my second gen. Shame I’ll be grinding some of that fancy powder coat I paid for. But hey big ass brakes!

Not sure that every application has to be trimmed considering there is significant room for that gusset to be welded in different spots by a fab shop, but yes here are some pics: IMG_20180206_220932_01.jpg IMG_20180206_220926_03.jpg

Sorry, gotta ask.. instead of cutting the factory dust shield off, why not quick remove the wheel bearing so that you could remove the dust shield all together?

I tried to leave it as large as I could so it would still do its job and keep rocks out of my rotor hats, it was just a theory at the time and the execution may have been a bit off haha
