    Cheap paint will work, use a good clear and use a bunch of coats. I would do two coats of black and about eight clear. If you can get it apart, it will look better than taping off the leather. I would put the sticker on before the clear and wet sand with some 2000 grit paper then polish and wax.

    I'm not constantly touching it though. I like to grab onto the shifter while I drive so the bare paint will always be contaminated with oil from my hands
