Before you get it rebuilt if it's just rust, break it down, get some 0000 steel wool and some oil. Rust the rust down with both and clean. Repeat if necessary, but it won't be most likely. Rust pits still there? Good, that's character! ;)
You will be surprised what little effort it takes. I did this to 2 of my Dads guns that were in sorry shape. Look like brand new? Nope but looked a hella lot better.

Don't you have to shoot it to unload it? How is anyone gonna know what bullet is in the bore? Is the man gonna sift thru the sand pile?

he can look in my pouch or the reload tubes i have on me. I work closely with our state wildlife agency, and don’t need an infraction. The intent of the flintlock season is to use “primitive” firearms. There is a muzzleloader season where you can use 309, cap, sabot slugs, whatever, as long as it loaded down the muzzle with powder and bullet.

I disagree with this thought process. I want a confident, clean kill with one shot. I'm not going risk causing suffering by using antique technology.

I love the black powder hunting, but using a ball with no aerodynamic stability seems a step in the wrong direction.

This is my opinion. Don't flame me too bad.

Watch Mark Novak videos on his firearms restorations.

Friendly on the level of rust depends on the methods needed. Boiling in water and carding is the best way, IMO. It allows the factory finish to remain as complete as possible without scratching the surface and it converts the rust, as well.

No flame, the argument had been made. My position is if they have the season, I’ll participate. I practice with mine, and am fairly confident/competent with it out to 50 yards. I won’t attempt a shot past that for reason you mentioned.

if you havent figured it out, the people making the laws DONT want or give a crap about ethical. They want your $$. Sure they want conservation of resources but only to make money.

I 100% agree they shouldnt allow stuff like ball ammo to hunt. Idaho has some stupid Muzzleloader and bow hunting laws.
