Trying to recall numbers, my gut recall says only the loadmaster survived and he was horribly burned over most of his body. I remember they were special aeromedical evacuating him to San Antonio ... burn center at Wilford Hall Medical Center on Lackland AFB ... IIRC.

    EDIT: 2 crew survived.

Today we where finishing up a job, and part of that was wrecking out a couple.of old poles.

One of them was an underground riser pole. And when I looked closer I notice the underground termination, what we call a pothead. .. looked like.it was pretty old. So I I mentioned to my foreman that I wanted to save the pothead if it was in good shape.

So I went up and cut it off so It could be saved with out damage when we cut the rest of it down.

Here it is an old brown porcelain. Single phase pothead ...

Now for the really interesting part of this all... what did this feed? Well it fed an electric hot fence. And not the kind you have on the ranch either. But high voltage(guessing 7,200v since that is the phase to ground voltage where I work.) Kill anyone or anything that touches it type of fence.

In order to get my truck to the pole to remove it with out popping tires, I had to remove this little guy.

    20190912_225424.jpg

This insulator isolated the hot fence from the ground. Under the brown porcelain is a steel mount that anchors it to the ground and on top is the flange where the fence posts bolt to.

bit of history history in this stuff.

I can't imagine going through or seeing something that. An Army Blackhawk went down when I was at Tallil, everyone survived but just seeing that on it's side the next morning gives a person a real sick feeling.

They're never nice. I got a little callused to it when I worked search and rescue...had to to be effective in the job. Only really got to me when kids were involved. My brother-n-law was flight nurse on LifeFlight helos in Iowa for 5 or 6 years. He got out of that because of the kid factor; went back to desk job managing Emergency Room and overall hospital emergency services planning etc. Some things cannot be unseen...and it weighs on the mind.
