Ohhh, emmmm, geeeee. I make things too hard at times.

I was all psyched to build this new baseplate and so yesterday I spent some time out on the truck taking measurements to see where I wanted to put it. That's when I looked under the bed and realized where I wanted it to go was going to be right where the stock spare tire mount is. Then the idea I started with 6 months ago hit me and made me feel a little stupid.

So, I took this crap off:

    IMG_0389_zps5f8a92fd_eb722a366355ce8ccc7bac90ff1cb318225f5529.jpg

    And I had this:

And test fitting showed the original baseplate sat right in there like it was made for it:

    IMG_0388_zps74360ba0_62a2f820c2a6a56b0ab8b7726823b6cf532c3006.jpg

I just have to drill some holes now.

Started drilling this morning. Got through the spare tire bracket:

    Daylight!

    IMG_0391_zps956bfe7a_1a7d6dfc5932380c504d2772bed240fb87b1f554.jpg

Threaded in the spindle to see how it held:

    IMG_0394_zps85d194e6_35616809afac9e2d6e15a6c3c03d5f2e6dfa43d4.jpg

    Whoop, there it is:

    IMG_0392_zps1b1aabc2_e29bd26be861a174adcb4da12e8f9aeeebbbb841.jpg

    And of course, secure:

    IMG_0395_zpsba9748b3_6743e19743ceee55c297210689b1d3e8ecd11379.jpg

I still have to clean up the holes, trim the base plate and install the mounting bolts but the heavy lifting is done.

Off to start thinking about a hi-lift mount.

The baseplate sits flush in the spare tire bracket but may be a little off the truck's centerline towards the driver side. I'd guess 1/4", maybe 1/2". I drilled mine right on the centerline and now have to trim the passenger side corners off the baseplate. A good hacksaw should make short work of it.

Silas and any of you other locals, if you want to pop by and check it out, I should be home around 3p and thereafter. Most likely, I'll be out in the garage finishing it up.

The other nice things is the bed is Rhino-lined so the tire's got plenty of stiction to keep it in place. I'll find out how it does next weekend.

The other cool thing is I can still put my ARE tonneau cover on. One of the reasons I didn't get a Tiregate. That, and cost.

Got the mount bolts done. I ditched the 3/8" hardware that came with the spare tire mount and went and bought 8mm stuff. Hell if I'm sullying my toyota with non-metric.

Hey Silas, the 20mm length studs worked fine. Slipped right in the hole and was just the right length for 2 flat washers and a nylon locking nut.

    IMG_0400_zps4aa81eb2_6c9caa28fbc61aa72515f876943682ff4507353c.jpg

Really stoked how this came out. Another gratuitous pic.

On to figuring out the hi-lift mount. I've got two sets of mounts to start with.

    IMG_0398_zpsd974a578_c1d6d44bbade7e66ab6afd3c012a795f61de3688.jpg

I mocked up the bar mount ones and did not like:

    IMG_0341_zps1ca8f701_1528e5272adb9ea24fe08ef72e78bd07e9bc670f.jpg

My other idea is to use the bolt-ons and mount it to the bed up towards the cab. Still thinking about it though.

    Plenty to come
how much more does the bumper weigh over the stock bumper? Did it drop the rear?

Didn't weigh them but felt similar when I was installing the new one. It didn't drop the rear.

Nobody seemed interested in the aFe Stage 2 intake I put up for sale but plenty of peeps looking for a stock intake so I yanked the stock one and reinstalled the aFe.

I've got 3 years of data that says there is no statistically significant difference in the mpg of the truck with it versus without it. No idea how it dynos.

    Today's projects:

Took care of the hyperblink due to the front LED turn signals.

And I took off the sway bar.

I'll have to get some pictures with the front end flexing. Not a whole lot of difference with the sway bar taken out.

Went wheelin' today. Silas talked me through this whole "flexing" thing and snapped a picture for me. :D

The spare tire holder is now trail tested and passed with flying colours.
