    Stock:(...for now
I just bought my first car. Red 96 regular cab 2wd manual tacoma. It has 158,000 miles on it and runs perfect. The first thing i want to do is take the tiny 195's off but i dont have money to lift it yet so i want to put on the biggest tires i can fit. But i dont know how big i can go with out any issues. I want to get off the ground as much as possible with out lifting it.

    Nope..... I would say 215 or 225.

I would say try 215s first.

35's dont be shy. may require removal of fenders and bedsides and part of the cab. :)

    Looks like 215 70 14 was an optional size, shoot for 215 75 14s.
I had some 205 75 14 maxxis buckshots on my old 97 nissan and it works better in snow and mud. 14 inch and any kind of offroad tires might be tough.

30x10.50/15 is the largest but as you step up in size you lose all your low end power and some MPG.

You have a base model and until you lift and regear it will be all show no go.

Expect to rub all over up front.
