I've been looking around but can't find a good answer, I've got rims on my truck that mimic stock that currently use 265/70r17s. I'm looking to upgrade next tire change as I just lifted it and added the ARB front bumper. Ive seen mixed videos about stock setups, mostly on 3rd gens. What size tire will the stock rims fit? 285s potentially? Any hazards to stretching that limit? Would I need spacers? Mainly looking to save cost on the rims, they don't come cheap.
    Thanks!

Select a tire. The specs for the tire will state what rim is required.

    285. Is the height of the tire
And yes the stock 16” rims take 285’s without issues

What's the specs on your current wheel? How wide is it? No reputable shop will mount a tire that is not rated for a rim width. For example toyo AT III 285/75R17 is rated a minimum rim width of 7.5". So most shops will not mount that tire on any wheel skinnier than a 7.5" wide.

Upon measuring the wheel, it's 17" high and about 9" wide total. I've heard the real width is bead to bead so I'd guess 8-8.5".

On top of that, I worry about the UCA clearance. Thoughts on a 1.25" spacer? I've heard good things about Bora spacers.

I thought you said they were factory wheels? I don't believe toyota ever did a 17x(8-9) from factory. The back side of the wheel should have specs. Should give 17x... And the offset of the wheel.

285s will work with your stock wheels but the main variable here is the stock backspacing. Usually requires wheel spacers to avoid UCA rubbing along with possibly a cab mount chop. The wheel width is not a factor. Heck, lots of guys running 285s on trd pro wheels which I believe is only a 7" wide wheel. There's plenty of local tire shops that will gladly take your money if you have issues getting the larger chain tire shops such as Discount or NTB to mount 285s on stock rims.

Well shit why not just stuff some 37x13.5 on them bad boys then. I'm sure a shop will do it!

Now you are being ridiculous. We are talking about 285/75s. C'mon now, 37s would require a regear.

That's just what the big chains want you to think. You could find a local shop to take your money and do 37s without a regear.

I have no doubt about that but 37s on stock 3.73 gears would make me drive with one leg out the door to skateboard the truck up to speed.

    No.

Let's use a 285/75r17 for an example, shall we?

285 is the section width of the tire (sidewall to sidewall Not contact patch), in millimeters. 75 is the aspect ratio (sidewall height), and is a percentage of the section width.

    The aspect ratio dictates how tall the tire is, based upon section width. Simple math. What's 75% of 285mm? 213.75mm (x2 = 417.5mm) + 17" wheel (431.8mm) = 849.3mm (33.43") tall tire.

Like spitdog said, good eye! I just got new ones last fall too, gotta love the cost of having fun lol.

I said they mimic stock, it was my assumption since the 265 tires were on them like stock just 70 instead of 65. Per measurement they are wider, the offset I'll have to check at some point once I can pull off the wheel. Daily driver and all.

Any chance just off of width of 315/70r17s? I've seen people run that setup on things like F150s online, but I'll probably stick to a 305 or 295 if I have to. I'd like to go wider.

What do you mean mimic stock? Mimic it in height? Width? Offset? You're leaving out so much information for us to give you any real advice. What size lift do you have? Have you gone to the company website for the tire you want to see what their recommended wheel width mounting is? Anything wider than 285 is going to require a body mount chop also. Then going into 315 it's going to require even more cutting.

For example on this Cooper tire. Even the same width tire, 285, has different wheel widtchs it is recommended for based on side profile. Yes, you could find a tire shop that will mount what ever your little heart wants on your current wheel even if the manufacturer doesn't recommend it. However most will not touch it due to liability if that tire were to fail they could be held responsible for damages done since they mounted that tire on the incorrect wheel size.
