For those following my build, a bit boring, I know lol, well I updated an earlier portion of my build with some good news that I finally wired up a nice bright white LED to the ignition key ring that I retrofitted off a 3rd gen 4Runner part.

It's so much nicer than the weak stock green incandescent bulb.

Great looking build, I just picked up a set of the clear tail lights (thanks for sharing the link). I'm been searching for the light ring do you happen to have the part #? Thanks.

Thanks! I think you will like the clear tail lights, Depo is a good brand and I have never had any leak or steam issues in any of the Depo products I've owned!!

I hear ya, I had some trouble trying to source out the light ring. I even tried my local dealership and they couldn't find it but I think the parts dept guy was damn lazy to be honest. You might get lucky on eBay or your local pick n pull, junkyard. You'll eventually get lucky :)

    Nice build.

I see you have the BAMF bolt on sliders. I purchased mine during the same sale and expect them to ship pretty soon. So how did the installation go? Any tips that you can offer?

    Thanks.

    Thanks Bruce.

Yes and btw I gotta tell you that I really LOVE my BAMF sliders. An unexpected bonus is my 6 year old kid now uses them to hop in the back of the double cab without my help!

I think you will be extremely satisfied with Jerry's sliders when they arrive at your door. I love the quality and design and they are truly worth the wait. The sliders are pretty hefty (thats a good thing!) and if you also had Jerry PC them the coverage and texture of his PC coating is top notch, he doesn't skimp on his work.

In regards to the install, well I haven't actually fully installed them yet :p. My younger brother will be visiting soon to help me with the drilling. He's much younger with a stronger back and is in better shape then I am. :D I could probably do it all myself since I already have them semi mounted with 4 of the 8 bolts locked in place using the factory holes already on the frame. I will not be hitting the local trails till mid summer so im not in a rush. With only 4 bolts (2 on each side) holding them up, the front of the sliders does droop a little lower since i have not drilled there yet, but hardly noticeable. The way the sliders are designed to (hug) the frame I could probably still use them with no trouble since the bolts are simply there to keep the sliders in position.

A few tips off my head-

    1) There are a couple of plastic mounts that are on the frame that need to be popped out of position so the sliders's metal slabs that hug the frame can slide in all the way. Just have a flat head screw driver and some long nose pliers with you and you are all set. A couple of zip ties wouldn't hurt to keep things tight and fit after repositioning stuff under there.

    2) You will also probably need to invest in a angle drive kit to drill the holes into the frame. I think I found a good one off Amazon (third party seller) for $17 and I think this kit will do the trick. I plan to send this pic to my brother just to piss him off, but the more i think about it, it may actually discourage him from visiting me. :D

    IMG_4554_zps5e3658fa_f09434d216d1c91e2d3353c7475b2eef42c736f0.jpg

    3) Get yourself a set of good quality drill bits and start off small and work your way up. start with 1/4" and work your way to 1/2". Jerry's drill bit recommendation here.

When you get a chance, let me know what you think of the sliders when you get them. :)

With summer approaching, the wife is now nagging me to finish remodeling our house. So now looking into my horrid future, I see that I have tons more sh*t to haul that's the length of a football field. Owning a 1st gen double cab with a short bed I ended up needing to find me a quick solution, a bed extender. All you DC owners know what the length limitations are on our truck beds. Well to add to that, I've got a A.R.E. topper so I wanted to find an extender that will not only extend my short bed, but that was still topper friendly, could be foldable and "stashed away" in the garage or in the truck bed. Oh a huge bonus is if it could be easily removable or just out of the way when I load tons of crap in and out of my beloved Cargo. Is there such a product out there?

So after many wasted hours on the internets, reading up on all the many aftermarket bed extender options, this guy by the name of John Schneider, aka Bo Duke, recommended that I go get me an insta-gate.

    John Schneider infomercial

He basically brainwashed me, like all infomercials but unfortunately his infomercial gig looked as if it was from the 90's and so this insta-gate product was almost impossible to find. Luckily a nice guy by the name of Reggie was still selling them on eBay (of all places) and the price was a bit cheaper than Toyota's OEM bed extenders so I took a plunge. I think I made a good purchase cause gawwd I love this well designed bed extender!!!!

Only 4 torx machined screws later (no drilling, they bolt into the existing factory holes of the tailgate), I think I've finally found my solution. A high quality, sturdy, aluminum tubing (very light), stealthy bed extender. I really think Toyota should have equipped all 1st gen double cabs with the insta-gate or at least offer it as an OEM product.

A bonus is that the wifey and I have plans this summer to take the rig out camping and we plan to sleep under the A.R.E. topper. It will be nice to have the ablilty to stretch out the legs (thank you insta-gate!) and still have the topper's window down and locked in place. I think I'll cut up some weatherproof material to go over the gate should it rain and for some extra privacy when camping time comes along.
    IMG_4628_zpsa500c484_3059c313e3b0721e7cc08d3dfb25cd2c980d592f.jpg

My only complaint about this extender, not a deal breaker by any means, is that it can't be used inside the bed in reverse like the Toyota OEM extender where it hugs all your crap towards your tailgate, but I already have plans to pick up some removable cargo netting with mounting screws to have that additional functionality. No affiliation with these folks but I highly recommend this product especially if you own a short bed DC.

    So off with the unboxing....

Nice! I've been contemplating some sort of bed extender like that (being that I'm in the same double cab/short bed boat you are)...will love to hear how your camping experience goes because that's a thought I've had about maybe sleeping under the cap.

Thanks man, It seemed kind of gimmicky at first but the more I use the instagate the more I'm glad I purchased it. I think the Toyota OEM extender is a bit overpriced for what it is so the instagate with all the extra features pretty much fit the bill for me.

I'll let you know how it goes. I'm already looking at couple of sleeping platforms, LEDs, portable fan, and power backup to keep us both comfy under the shell. Wife and I are so overdue for another camping trip and my taco will be a nice addition to the experience! ;)
