    I used to sell these things when I worked at a bike shop. Your truck will handle it and the rack is sturdy enough for 4 bikes. I highly suggest strapping the bikes all down a lot more than the manual will tell you. They swing all over the place and the pedals move and everything. Lots of bungee cords! Personally I hate bike racks on the back of trucks, too vulnerable. They get dirty back there, they are asking to get crunched by a fender bender, but if it is your only option then it will work.

    yeah all those racks are fine

    more expensive ones rust less and are smoother action,
    but a bike rack is a bike rack is a bike rack. really, just make sure
    it is bolted in and you strapped them on, the bikes ain't going anywhere


    THEY WILL BE STOLEN THE MOMENT YOU LEAVE THEM UNATTENDED GUARANTEED!!!!!
    SO NEVER EVER TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE BIKES IF THEY ARE RACKED. you go to a rest stop
    or Rons Steak House, you leave one person in charge of watching bikes !!!!

    That is very interesting. I guess I'd be concerned about wind resistance on a long trip.

    I always had to sit with the nerds during lunch at school. I never got to sit with the cool kids....

    Check out a dakine shuttle pad. That's what I use and it holds five bikes no problem. Also it only costs about a hundred bucks so you will be saving money. Then go to Harbor freight and pick up a 15 foot cable and a lock so you can put it through all the frames and lock all the bikes at once to the truck. Not guaranteed theft protection but it will keep an honest man honest.

    check out the thule T2 rack hitch rack. it will securely hold up to 4 bikes (with proper extensions) by the wheels instead of the top tube. i prefer this because its easier on and off and sometimes bikes have funky frame shapes.


    www.1upusa.com makes a nice lightweight USA made platform style rack but its more pricey

    As has been said either lock them down good and then some or do not let them out of your sight. Make sure the lock is for the frame and both tires.

    I have spent my life working in bike shops and ride a few times a week. The problem with all those other bike racks is that they are designed for your typical men's bike and if you try to throw on something other than that you likely either need an adapter to go from stem to seat or you put it on with the wheel's sticking up a funny angle.

    Thanks for the suggestion. I ended up getting the T2 at REI, since I have a $45 dividend there. Gonna put it together tomorrow.

    Just remember that every bike has a different rake angle to their down tube which means that 4 bikes will be sitting at 4 different angles on one of those racks. Tires in 8different positions etc etc......gets kinda sloppy.
