Order just placed and added notes about the high flow thermostat.

    Thank you!

Installed the 180 high flow. Like the instructions say don’t drop the nuts. I dropped the back one three times. I was in panic mode, lol. Awesome product. Easy 120K service done.

Got my T-Stat in the mail the other day. Awesome design @1GR-FE<3R and beautiful machine work by Unleashed Customs. I had to look it over in detail and admire it as a fellow programmer/machinist.

Warm up time is about the same with the high flow 180. I did loose a half gallon of coolant. Made it a little easier by removing the oil cooler hoses.

One of the issues I've been fighting for a few years is that on days with temps < about 30 degrees, if the fan is on full the heat will blow much cooler. This is even after a half hour on the freeway. Now I have replaced the thermostat 3x. I have cleaned and blown out forward and backward the heater core. I've measured the time it takes coolant to flow into the core and out of the core with the engine idling. Both are the same. I have followed all hoses and looked inside for clogs or pinches. I never have cooling problems in the summer even with temps above 100. The coolant is nice and new. When I get the RPM's up to about 1K+ I have good heat. I really think it's the nature of this engine. I have not replaced a water pump. They have metal fins and I don't see how that would help. If I could get about a 15% more flow I would have heat. When you say "more flow" (of course when the T-stat is opened) do you have any idea on how much more flow?

I'll buy one in a heartbeat if it helps. Thanks.

Edit: It's too early in the morning. I just thought about this and my heater issue has nothing to do with a T-stat flow. It would only occur if the T-stat gets stuck OPEN. The coolant to the heater core bypasses the radiator. I need more flow from the water pump and not through the radiator. Sorry.

How many miles on the water pump? Any coolant seeping out of the weep hole? Does the clutch fan free spin when manually spinning it? If it does it maybe time to replace it. Hook up a scan tool to see what the engine temp is at operating speed. Should be 190-200 ish. It’s tough to say if the high flow housing will help. Regardless it’s a great product with that cool factor.

Thanks. 176K miles. I have zero leaks of anything anywhere. Cooling fan has a little resistance but spins when off. Good idea on the scan tool. I’ll hook it up next time I drive to full temp.

It is possible with the colder climates your cooling system is operating extremely efficiently… to the point where it is bringing the temps down enough to cause the thermostat to cycle open and closed…

OE temp for Toyota is 180°, with the thermostat we have chosen there are 195° options readily available. If that is something you’d be interested in trying we can included a 195° thermostat! We live in SoCal so we have not had the ability to test the 195° in below freezing climates yet, but that is another option we have on the list of things to test… The 4.0 engine typically keeps the coolant at roughly 180° to 200°. Under heavy loads operating temps can be 200° to 220°. We have data documented of vehicles in colder weather climate running below 180°, especially under light or no load… going down hill, etc.

So if everything in your cooling system checks out and is in good condition… Our billet housing with a 195° thermostat may address your cold weather concerns!

Not a bad idea. Your solution allows us to put in different temp thermostats where the OEM one is fixed. I’d like to get one of your housings but with a 195 to try and a 180 in case I want to trade out in the summer.

For reference my current urd 170 keeps my temps in the 180's in Texas really only goes up to 190 in sitting traffic for awhile. I'm hopeful that the high flow 180 will do the same.

If it free spins the clutch fan maybe shot when spinning by hand. Does it sound like a tornado when the engine is running. It’s possible the fan is engaged all the time.

What's the advantage of a "high flow" housing if the coolant still has to go through a thermostat that will never open as wide as the housing?

Looks a little warm to me. Do you normally see water temps above 200?

Yes. Needle sits in the middle of the gauge. On the highway upper 190’s.
