So I want to lift my 3rd gen ~2", but don't want a firmer offroad shock. I have a TRD OR and love the soft ride characteristics of the stock 4600s. However, they only work for stock ride height. Is there an equivalent front/reward shock that'll have this type of ride/valving/tuning that'll support up to a 2" lift?

Edit: I am aware of the 5100s but have seen the reviews that it rides stiffer w/ or w/out new OME springs due to the different valving/tuning made toward wheeling.

Seems even the super expensive foxes, Kings, etc are firmer. Im aware how much firm is better when you're Wheeling but this truck will be seeing 90% streets so I'm fine with a bouncy offroad ride.

5100’s but it will stiffen you up if you keep the stock springs from your OR.

Yeah, I'm looking for the 4600 equivalent that supports a lift and doesn't stiffen the ride :) edited OP.

Have you driven a truck with a nice aftermarket suspension? Firmer doesn't necessarily mean harsher and less comfortable. Think about a 1990s Buick's ride compared with a Mercedes-Benz or BMW.

Honestly I found that the stock suspension would get so unsettled on rough anything(including pavement) that it ended up having a more jarring ride than I have now with a nice aftermarket setup. My current suspension is stiffer but actually more compliant as bumps are soaked up instead of bouncing the entire truck around.

Yeah, my last truck had a stage 5 icon setup. Been there, done that, not worth it to me. The ride is definitely more jarring n bouncy on trails in my stock Taco, but I'm fine with that considering how little I use it off road vs on road. Personal preference, but I don't enjoy the firm/stiff ride the 80% of time on road.

Fair, I really was not a fan of the stock suspension even on the road. Although I did do a lot of research when buying my suspension and it sounds like Icon's pretty bad as far as on-road ride.

These are what I went with. Little bit of lift and maintains the stock ride. I'm sure that the 3rd Gen equivalent would provide a similar if not same result.

how much of a lift did you apply? Or just an inch or two to level it out?

Jasmits1 is correct. A firmer ride doesn't necessarily mean it is going to be jarring. I went with OME 885's and 5100's set at 0 and this gave me 2 1/2" in front. The ride is so so much better than stock. Yes a little firmer but in a good way. The springs will give you the lift and soak up the speed bumps ect. No dipping in front while breaking. It is a much better ride. Put add a leaf's in back and your set.
You will like it for you daily driver and it will look great.

It was a couple inches just to level it out. It rides much nicer than the 11 year old suspension that it had on it.

I have a 2020 tacoma sr And. Currently have the bilstein 4600 aftermarket ones .i think they are valved diff then toyota 4600s but I also just noticed the seat height is the same as my stock shocks but theres more shaft travel and the shaft is a gpod 1.5 inches or so taller then my stock front shocks...i believe the coil would be compressed less when installing the coil but would this also give me a little lift?I did not measure before or after but I have always thought mine looks like a little higher then some I see..or would kt still be stock height ??? Does anyone know what a stock non trd trim is hub to fender so I can measure sometime?

The Bilstein 4600's are unrelated to the Toyota TRD OR shocks. 4600's are much larger in diameter and piston size.

It's just been repeated so much that everyone assumes it's true.

I know they are not the same .i noticed the 4600 aftermarket shocks are about an inch taller then the Hitachi ones that came on my sr .i was wondering if anyone else notoced on a sr that they got a little lift or if they used them on a trd if they stayed the same height as before
