886's are a higher rate spring than the 885 or 887. Most vendors will tell you that they do NOT suggest using 886's with the 5100's....The 885 and 887 are very near the limit as far as being too stiff for the (non adjustable) rebound dampening of a 5100. But they will work. 886's are too stiff and over-work the rebound dampening that shock provides. You get a jackhammer effect while driving, and you get a short life expectancy for the shock. People have used 886's with 5100's but there is a very high incidence reported of premature shock failure.

I'm golden with the 5100's and 885's.....After owning 4wds since the early 70's, 17 of them in fact, and working on (literally) hundreds of other trucks (for extra income) I have yet to ride in a truck that has the ride quality and comfort that I found when that combination went under my Tacoma. There are "mixed breed" combinations that work well. There are certain combinations that just don't work at all. Sometimes you have to cross borders to get the exact results you are looking for. Eibach didn't offer the height coil I was wanting...And I wanted the 5100's set @ 0"....So....Ya do what ya gotta do sometimes....

With that, I've been told by a couple guys who've used the combination that the OME front shock "clunking" (topping out over bumps) is even more prevalent with 886's than with lighter rate springs. Never experienced that for myself, but..... It's just a VERY stiff rate spring for a relatively light weight truck.

I agree..I've become more aware of those using 5100's with OME coils up to 885's and they are loving the setup.

That said, if they ever plan on going with 886 coils to run a plate bumper, winch, full skids, sliders etc..get OME shocks. They are designed to work with the 886 higher spring rates and won't prematurely wear like the 5100's would. If you are planning on doing this, you could sell your 5100/885 setup and make some decent money back than you would with blown 5100 shocks..I just like to think ahead and be prepared haha

I know what you mean haha my rear suspension has been overhauled 3-4 times already and I think I have it where I want it finally. Just have the get it on the trail and test up/down travel and make sure brake lines and bump stops are set properly. Only thing that would ever change down the road are shocks (quality and valving etc)

Haha oh man..well just in the last 2 weeks alone, I've gotten my rear suspension "finalized" for now :anonymous: with the BAMF shock relocation kit, 12" Bilstein 5125's and Bora .75" spacers and a Pelfreybilt front bumper and LED pods and fogs for the bumper.

I think I've been pretty good this month selling a lot of stuff I don't need or will be using with this new setup..makes things easier on the fiancée with the wedding at the end of this month haha

On to the next wants/needs on the to-do list..it never ends indeed

Bilstein 5100s are designed to be used with factory coils, not Eibach. However, they work just as well with factory, Eibach, and OME coils.

In fact, one could argue that they work better with OME coils than Eibach because OME coils (884/885) are closer to the factory spring rate.

That said, there are plenty of people who run the 5100/886 combo with no issues. On the other hand, I see a lot of "topping out" complaints from guys with the OME/886 combo.

I never did believe they were specific designed for our factory springs....I really have a hard time believing they took what our 2-3 different oem springs that come in our tacomas and specifically took 1 shock it tuned precisely to all tacoma spring types. From what I understood they were designed for the sport/sr5 springs and not the progressive off road springs.

I hear ya. I'm sure, just like everything else, "tuned for and/or designed for" are used loosely. Probably based on GVWR (+/- 500) and spring rate (+/- 100).

Whether or not they are specifically tuned for any of them, Bilstein's advertised Tacoma lift heights apply to factory coils on SR5, Sport, and Off Road models.

So... 885 coils for DCSB, but what if you are a 4cyl prerunner DCSB? Should I use the 884 coils because of less weight from the smaller engine and no transfer case? I want to sit level with a 2" AAL in rear and 5100's all the way around. keeping stock UCA's, so got to make sure I don't go too high up front. Thanks in advance.

I got 285 ko2 with my 17 rims. On a 3"lift. I hit at full lock or certain turning at my UCA. Bora .75 will fiX IT OR CAUSE MORE RUBING ELSEWHERE?

Probably rub elsewhere, but you should be able to trim and fix that.
