I'm looking at Bilstein 5100's with an add a leaf and am looking for feedback as to ride and performance. I drive 65/35 pavement/off-road and have a 2001 Tacoma with the 2.7l, 4wd. Currently just a bed rack with a Roof Top Tent.

What you are referring to is called the Basic Bro Build. Kinda like when you want to play music at your party that girls will dance to, so you just steal some basic chicks phone and use her Spotify. 5100’s are basically the same thing.

Probably 100+ threads on exactly this.

Use the search and check the 1st gen build threads.

I should be starting my basic bro build pretty soon…

Thanks! I did a search earlier and even saw your picture above, however could not find any ride or performance info.

    Because it's subjective.

One vehicle may feel "nice, controlled" to one person, and that same vehicle be "too stiff" for another.

Bilstein 5100s are a great, budget-friendly entry towards upgraded suspension, and really exceed most people's needs. Especially when their actual driving habits are greatly exaggerated.

A stock Tacoma is extremely capable in the right hands. Nothing wrong with a little bling though right?

I've got 5100s in the front on 880 ome coils with 4600s in the back and it rides 1000x nicer than the cheapo blown shocks it replaced. YMMV. Firm without being jarring

Thanks! My current shocks are done and rather than replace them with stock, I wanted to upgrade. My only concern was when on pavement that the ride would be too rough. And yes!! :) Due to a very short daily commute, 1/3 of my weekly driving is off-road

Even if you didn't off-road, no need to justify one's expense.

You want 5100s, get yourself 5100s.

I ran Fox 2.5 up front and 2.0 in the rear; without weight in the bed I would actually swap in some 5100s until it was time to put my bed rack and tent back in. Quick 5 minute job to change out rear shocks.

Reason being, the Fox rears were valved in a way to handle weight...without that extra weight the Bilsteins were perfect back there.
