Bilstein 6112 next to Bilstein 5100

So what's the good word? I'm looking for more feedback on the 6112 vs. 5100 comparison.

 

Sorry, I had replied to a couple of other threads after installing... and since been out of town.

I actually installed one 6112 on the passenger side and left my 5100 on the driver side for comparison. The difference between the two options is astounding, and I much prefer the 6112 both on and off-road. The 6112 simply acts more controlled in compression dampening, where I would describe the 5100 as more harsh. The 5100 moves from compression to rebound very quickly with no dwell or transition in between... on fast bumps and hard hits, the 5100 produces a "jarring" effect.

The 6112, on the other hand, has a notable transition between compression and rebound, which leaves me feeling as though the truck is more stable and controlled. I perceive less body roll and bump steer with the 6112, as well. Bumps are significantly "softer" feeling and overall the ride is greatly improved in my opinion.

All that said, my 5100s have a lot of miles on them, so I'm not comparing new apples to new oranges. Regardless, I'm a firm believer now that the 6112 is better suited to my application.

 

What coils are you running?

 

The 6112 are coilovers.

 

His footer states Toytec 3" units and the shock can be bought without coils...........hence the question

 

It's an old sig as he hasn't replaced the 5100 with 6112. His last update had him exchanging the old set up with the new 6112 assembly but I'll him respond to clarify.

They are level 8 wheels from discount tire 265/75r16 hankooks

late to the conversation…but I have a 3'' leveling kit currently on my tacoma. Would it be better to take that out and install the Blistein 6112's?? and how much lift can i get out of those? Thanks

 

From the HOR site:
"Shocks can be adjusted anywhere from 0 - 2.5" of lift."

From what I understand, these would give you a much better quality ride than a leveling kit.

 

Do the Bilsteins need to be rebuilt eventually?? (for example like Icon/Kings)

 

@docseano only if they start leaking but Bilsteins should last you awhile, I had the 5100s on my 05 and never had any premature wear or leaks for over 50k miles

 

I am considering the 5100's with OME 887 coils. Looking at adding a 100-115lb front bumper. Will this setup hold? Or should I go with OME struts and 886's?

 

How is the on-highway ride with the 6112s?

 

Highway ride is a little better than the 5100s in my opinion

 

I don't want to go cheap. I do want a good ride and a good lift and do it right the first time.
I was just seeing if it's worth it to go with the 6112 and if I could get 3" with that and use a UCA.
Or if I can only achieve 3" with the 5100/887 and I can get the UCA for the same price as the 6112 without UCA

5100/887/ Dakar and UCA=$1600 (and 3")

Yes. I think on the top setting i could have got 3 inches or more. I have a prerunner though

 

I got a kit that included the 6112's and coilover. From what I'm reading here the 6112 is longer? Would that compute to a higher lift of the front over a 5100?
