Bilstein rear 5100’s rough?

    I’m sure I could have searched and found an answer. I have a 16 trd double cab offroad. I have bilstein 5100’s set at zero in front with ome springs for a 1.5 lift. Rides great up front. The rear I have a 3 leaf headstrong aal with no overload. With the 5100’s. Rides well on pavement and slow offroading, but very hoppy and stiff on washboard and dirt roads when going faster. Is there different rear shocks that would help? Airing down helps for sure, just thinking that these shocks could b the culprit. Fyi, I’m running bfg at load C tires. Thanks

    Do you have any weight in the bed, typically you will need to add 200 to 400 pounds to the bed of the truck to make it more smooth. Just my experience. It rides better loaded than unloaded.

    Sometimes, I know there’s things like putting weight in the back or airing down that’s going to help. I just seem to recall some people talking about a different Bilstein shock you could use in the rear that was a lot better.

    There's the 5160 reservoir shock which is a lot beefier, but not sure if it'll help with washboard stuff.

    Better shocks than the 5100s back there might help. Bilstein 5160s.

    I have 5100s on all four corners with stock suspension. Fronts are at .65” lift and back has a 1/2 inch spacer on top of the leaf pack.

    Prior to the Bilsteins, I purchased new Falken tires sized 265/75-16 at 900 miles after driving all stock first, so experienced the ride with the new tires for a few hundred miles, then the new shocks for a few hundred miles and then the spacer in back last.

    I like the 5100s as they feel only slightly firmer than stock and provide a more controlled ride and handling. The difference was very obvious to me right away. What surprised me and what I wasn’t expecting was the decrease in body roll in corners and the increased handling ability while on road. Large speed bumps are soaked up just as well as the stock Bilsteins. This was all a pleasant surprise.

    I haven’t been on washboards yet, so we’ll see how they handle that in the future.

    Like people are saying, a light rear end with additional springs and light shocks could be the culprit.

    You could add some gear or weight in the bed or move up to the better Bilstein 5160s in the rear that are still affordably priced and might provide additional damping control.

    Toolbox or camper shell should fix it right up. Just need a little weight now that your springs are proper truck springs.

    Somewhat tangential, but is your truck level or tail high with your setup? I recently swapped a friend's old OME setup on to my truck, so I have ome with 886s in the front and am up maybe 1.75". The rear shocks are shot and saggy, and I'm looking at replacing them with 5100s and I'll be swapping my leafs for a pack with the headstrong AAL. Just curious if that will level off my bro lean lol
